PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Taylor Jack (ranked 361 p4p, 47 weight class) and Ivan Volkov (ranked 477 p4p, 61 weight class). Jack comes into the arena with Lucid Dreams blaring out of the sound system. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Taylor Jack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivan Volkov!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jonathan Paton and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jack swings widly with a right hand
and Volkov connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Nice takedown defense from Jack. No joy for Volkov on that attempt.
An attempted straight right counter from Jack misses the target.
Jack cracks a nice hook into Volkov's ribs.
Volkov doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Jack connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Volkov tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jack was well out of range. Poor timing from Volkov.
We've been told by Jack's head coaches at Fist of Fury Training Center that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Jack gets tackled into the cage by Volkov. Volkov maintains the clinch.
Volkov blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Volkov breaks from the clinch.
Jack fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Volkov has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jack throws a nice outside leg kick.
Volkov shoots in but no luck this time.
Jack is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Taylor Jack has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ivan Volkov.
Jack scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Volkov doesn't seem bothered though.
Jack misses the jab.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Volkov tries to clinch but Jack moves away
and Jack counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Volkov throws a lazy uppercut
and Jack counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Jack defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Volkov.
Volkov misses with a lunging right hand
enabling Jack to counter with a crisp jab.
Jack gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Volkov throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Jack counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Volkov doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Jack counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Volkov stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Jack throws a big shot that misses.
A little jabbing left from Volkov on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Jack throws a hook but Volkov avoids it easily.
Jack throws the left hand but Volkov avoids the punch easily.
Volkov tries to clinch but Jack is having none of it.

Volkov bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Volkov in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Jack takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Volkov tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Volkov misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Volkov tries to advance to mount but Jack denies him.
Volkov slows the pace down.
The ground and pound from Volkov seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Volkov tries for a kimura but Jack is defending well.
Volkov throwing strikes but Jack manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Volkov is looking to regain half guard here but Jack keeps moving and retains side control.
Jack wants to control but Volkov is keeping him busy.

Volkov prevents Jack from moving into mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Volkov manages to get back to half guard.
Jack throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Volkov tries to roll over but Jack keeps him under control.
Volkov avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Jack.

Jack wants to lay and pray for a moment but Volkov keeps working.
Volkov is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Jack's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Jack's back!

Volkov is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Jack defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Even with his hooks in, Volkov manages to miss with strikes from the back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Taylor Jack will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Volkov misses with a hook to the body
and Jack connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Volkov tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Jack manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Volkov misses with a looping right.
Volkov throws a right hand that misses
and Volkov takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Volkov misses with a takedown
and Jack counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Volkov chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Jack can pounce on him.

Jack avoids the body shot from Volkov.
Volkov throws a right hand that Jack ducks under and follows up with a left that Jack also avoids with ease.
Jack was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Jack misses with an uppercut. Volkov saw that one coming.
Volkov looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Volkov moves to clinch but Jack breaks away
and Jack makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Jack misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Volkov.
A nice side step and Volkov releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Volkov closes this distance looking for a takedown but Jack circles away.
Taylor Jack has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ivan Volkov.
Volkov blocks a leg kick.
Volkov looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Volkov checks a low kick from Jack.
A swing and a miss from Jack.
Jack does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Volkov tries to close the distance and clinch up but Jack swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Volkov throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Volkov avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Volkov swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Ivan Volkov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Volkov shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Jack circles away from the clinch attempt.

Volkov bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
What's Jack going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.

Volkov cracks Jack with a big right hand but Jack just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Volkov wants to take a breather but Jack manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Volkov.
Jack is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Volkov passes into half guard.

Volkov seems to be looking for submissions.

Volkov wants to control but Jack is keeping him busy.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Volkov working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Jack is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Volkov thows a huge punch but Jack dodges it nicely.

Volkov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Jack keeps control of the position for the meantime.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Volkov wants to take a breather but Jack is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Taylor Jack will probably get the nod.

Volkov tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jack sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Volkov somewhat.

A little feinted left hand from Jack on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Volkov ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Jack throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Volkov sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Volkov looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jack is fending him off so far but Volkov persists. Nope, Jack circles away and we're back to standing.
Jack swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Volkov fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Donk. Jack catches Volkov right on the button with a cross.
Jack misses with an uppercut. Volkov saw that one coming.
Jack connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Volkov momentarily.
Jack is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Volkov can do to turn this around?
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Volkov takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Volkov darts in looking for a takedown but Jack gets double underhooks and turns Volkov into the cage.
Volkov shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Jack cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Jack stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jack wants it to stay on the feet.
A quick step to the side and Jack tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Volkov tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jack sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Volkov somewhat.
Volkov takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Jack.
Taylor Jack is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Volkov has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Jack.

And that's the end of the fight!
Taylor Jack showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Jack, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
