Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Shane Mitchell (ranked 1729 p4p, 191 weight class) and Teshima Shigochiyo (ranked 3713 p4p, 326 weight class). Mitchell comes to the cage accompanied by Michael Jackson - Beat it. Shigochiyo has chosen Yoshida Brothers - Rising as his entrance music. Teshima Shigochiyo has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shane Mitchell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Teshima Shigochiyo!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Ben Watson and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A looping hook to the body misses from Mitchell. Shigochiyo does a little dance to reset his feet.

Mitchell scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shigochiyo has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mitchell is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Shigochiyo will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Still in the clinch, Mitchell scores with a nice short uppercut.
Mitchell can't find room to land a body shot as Shigochiyo controls the action.

Shigochiyo is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mitchell pulls his head out easily.
Shigochiyo won't allow Mitchell to pass to mount.

Mitchell is working for a kimura but Shigochiyo is defending it quite comfortably.

Mitchell slows the pace down in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mitchell's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mitchell tries to clinch up.
Shigochiyo changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Shigochiyo swats away the attempt to clinch by Mitchell.
Shigochiyo is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Mitchell rushes Shigochiyo and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mitchell prevents a takedown attempt there.
Mitchell fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mitchell tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Mitchell using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Shigochiyo has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Mitchell has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Shigochiyo wants to get back to full guard.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Shane Mitchell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Shigochiyo looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Shigochiyo is breathing heavily.

Mitchell has closed the distance and engaged Shigochiyo in a clinch.
Mitchell lands with a short shot to the head.

Mitchell passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Shigochiyo!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mitchell seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shigochiyo for as long as he can get away with.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Mitchell digs a good hook to Shigochiyo's body.
Shigochiyo takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Mitchell stuffs the takedown.

Shigochiyo gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Mitchell is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shigochiyo can do to turn this around?
Mitchell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We've been hearing that Mitchell has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Mitchell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shigochiyo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shigochiyo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Mitchell in particular looking to stall.
Mitchell uses his free foot to push down on Shigochiyo's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Shigochiyo.
Mitchell tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Shigochiyo can't escape the position.

Mitchell is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Shigochiyo to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Shigochiyo shrugs it off.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shigochiyo is trying desperately to improve position.
Mitchell controlling the pace for now.

Teshima Shigochiyo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Mitchell wants to finish this one by submission but Shigochiyo is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Mitchell.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shane Mitchell showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mitchell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
