PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Arnold Vincent (ranked 24740 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Schultz (ranked 4486 p4p, 0 weight class). Dave Schultz told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Arnold Vincent!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dave Schultz!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Franklyn Lucas and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schultz misses the shot to the body.
Schultz looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vincent is fending him off so far but Schultz persists. Nope, Vincent circles away and we're back to standing.
It looked like Vincent was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Vincent shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Schultz sprawls well. Schultz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Vincent gets slowly back to his feet.

Schultz has Vincent up against the cage in a clinch.

Schultz pulls guard successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Schultz is looking for a triangle here but Vincent uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Schultz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Vincent. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Vincent thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Vincent is trying to get an arm triangle but Schultz is defending well.
Vincent has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Vincent will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Vincent cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Schultz is bucking up trying to escape but Vincent cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Schultz can't escape the position.
Vincent has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Schultz's face.

Vincent is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Schultz to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Schultz shrugs it off.

Vincent is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Schultz is surviving well by controlling Vincent's body position as best he can.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Schultz will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Vincent is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Schultz can do to turn this around?

Schultz shoots in but Vincent avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Vincent really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Schultz slaps away a takedown attempt from Vincent, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Schultz stuffs the takedown attempt from Vincent. Vincent gets slowly back to his feet.
Schultz lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Vincent enables Schultz to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Vincent manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Vincent is on top in guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Vincent makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Schultz utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Vincent bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Schultz is desperately trying to improve his position but Vincent has a good base and remains in mount.

Vincent wants to finish this one by submission but Schultz is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Vincent.

Vincent swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Schultz is now in Vincent's guard. A big mistake from Vincent there, giving up the dominant position!

Schultz must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Vincent is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Schultz moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Schultz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Vincent postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Schultz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vincent manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Dave Schultz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Arnold Vincent is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Schultz throws a right and a left that Vincent avoids nicely.
Vincent went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Arnold Vincent.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Vincent, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
