Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kyle Smith (ranked 5793 p4p, 500 weight class) and Jett Askren (ranked 4981 p4p, 378 weight class). Kyle Smith has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kyle Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jett Askren!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Smith ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Askren moves away.
Smith leaves Askren with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Askren shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.
Kyle Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jett Askren.
Smith throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Askren appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Nice sprawl there from Smith as Askren shoots in.
Smith seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Askren shoots for a double leg takedown but Smith sprawls well. He's pushed Askren's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Smith wants to control but Askren is keeping him busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Askren tries to improve position but can't.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Smith trying to control the action but Askren is working from the bottom.
Askren is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Smith working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Smith is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Askren is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Smith's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Smith tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Askren.
Askren wants to get back to full guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Smith shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Askren is trying to defend but Smith finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Askren wants to control but Smith is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The fighters are battling for position here. Askren manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Askren is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.
Smith wants to control from the top but Askren keeps moving.

Askren is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Askren looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Askren is on top in guard.

Smith looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Smith is looking for a triangle but Askren pushes his legs off easily.

Askren stands up and waves to Smith to follow him.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kyle Smith will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Smith throws a body kick that misses.
Askren leaves Smith with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Askren misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Smith throws a series of punches but Askren avoids them all with ease.
Askren fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

And Askren tries to counter it with a takedown but Smith pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Askren is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Smith is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Smith feints and as Askren raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Smith stopping the sweep attempt from Askren.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Askren swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Askren keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

Askren wants to control but Smith passes easily into half guard.
Askren is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Askren won't allow Smith to pass to mount.
Askren manages to get to full guard.

Askren looking for a triangle here. Smith is fighting it but it looks tight! Askren pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Smith is tapping out - this one is all over!
