PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mat Diaz (ranked 476 p4p, 67 weight class) and Charles Hawtry (ranked 430 p4p, 60 weight class). Diaz comes to the cage accompanied by I Got Five On It. Hawtry is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by The Rain. Charles Hawtry is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mat Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Hawtry!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Russell Pearce and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Hawtry scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Diaz throws a jab when Hawtry was well out of range.
Diaz thuds his right hand into Hawtry's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Diaz tries to sprawl but Hawtry drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Hawtry is keen to just control but Diaz is a slippery customer.
Hawtry working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Hawtry is nestled in close to Diaz, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Hawtry has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Diaz can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Diaz wants to control from the top but Hawtry keeps moving.

A close round but Charles Hawtry will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Hawtry throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Diaz uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hawtry.
Hawtry uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Diaz.

Diaz misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Hawtry.
Hawtry misses with a straight left.
Hawtry cracks Diaz with a right hand to the side of the head.
Diaz fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hawtry manages to avoid it.
Hawtry is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Diaz throws a head kick that misses.
Diaz takes a swing at Hawtry's ribcage but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz lands a jab to Hawtry's midsection.
Diaz throws a hook to the side of Hawtry's head but Hawtry sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Hawtry lands a nice shot to the body.
Hawtry throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Hawtry feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Diazs jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Diaz uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hawtry.
Hawtry shoots for a double leg takedown but Diaz sprawls well. He's pushed Hawtry's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Diaz punishes Hawtry's body with a nice straight punch.
Diaz misses with a body shot.

Diaz closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hawtry's guard.

Hawtry is pulling down on Diaz's head to control his posture.
Diaz controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Hawtry controls Diaz momentarily but Diaz frees himself.
Charles Hawtry has got the better of the ground game so far.
Diaz throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hawtry works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hawtry is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Diaz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hawtry trying to mount his opponent but Diaz defends it.
Diaz wants to get back to full guard.
Diaz works his way to full guard. Good work.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Diaz wants to sweep here but Hawtry controlling him for the moment.
Hawtry passes Diaz's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Diaz is staying active underneath Hawtry, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Hawtry uses his free foot to push down on Diaz's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Diaz.

Hawtry pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Hawtry lands a big elbow - Diaz is in trouble! More strikes from the mount and Diaz is forced to tap out!

Charles Hawtry seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
