PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Steph Curry (ranked 1578 p4p, 183 weight class) and Pentti Pentele (ranked 2487 p4p, 277 weight class). Curry's entrance music is Metallica - Enter Sandman. A fine choice. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steph Curry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pentti Pentele!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pentele pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Pentele takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Curry has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Doherty's Gym in the buildup to the fight.
Pentele throws a body punch but Curry moves out of range.
Curry fails to land the takedown.
Curry takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Curry dives in and grabs Pentele's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pentele pushes down on Curry's head and hops out.
A nice side step and Pentele releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Curry misses with a takedown attempt
and Pentele counters with a straight right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steph Curry. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Curry ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Pentele looks to land a combination but Curry avoids it well.
Pentele slaps away a takedown attempt from Curry, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Pentele keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Curry thows a left - swing and a miss!
Curry connects with a leg kick. Pentele looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Curry half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Pentele scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Pentele tries to sprawl but Curry drives through with a takedown into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pentele has a hand on Curry's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Curry takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Curry wants to control the pace but Pentele is squirming around nicely.

Curry takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Pentele tries to roll but Curry sticks to his back.

Curry is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

A close round but Pentti Pentele will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Still in the clinch, Pentele scores with a nice short uppercut.

Curry gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Curry won't allow Pentele to sweep him here.
Pentele wants to stand but Curry is controlling the position.
Pentele looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Curry puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Curry seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pentele does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Curry is staying tight to Pentele's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pentele throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Pentele misses with a jab, cross combination.
Curry attempts a counter takedown but Pentele avoids it well and moves away.

and Curry decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Pentele's guard.

Steph Curry overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Curry seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Curry is looking to advance position but Pentele won't allow it.
Pentele is looking for a sweep. Curry is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Pentele is trying to maintain the position but Curry is very close to passing his half guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Pentele throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Curry.

Curry shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Curry works his foot free and advances to mount.
Curry tries to control but Pentele wriggling away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Curry has hold of Pentele's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Pentele manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Curry cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Pentele sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Pentele wants to get back to his feet.

Pentele is looking to improve his position.

Pentele throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Curry is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pentele can do to turn this around?

Pentele wants to control but Curry postures up.
Pentele is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Curry has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Curry seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Pentele for as long as he can get away with.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Curry has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Pentele throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Curry is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Pentele pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Curry has a couple of punches blocked by Pentele.

Pentele throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Curry goes for a takedown attempt but Pentele pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Steph Curry showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Curry has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Steph Curry was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
