PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carter Joyce (ranked 5175 p4p, 0 weight class) and Canelo Avila (ranked 6465 p4p, 0 weight class). Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Carter Joyce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Canelo Avila!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Taro Takaoka and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Joyce shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Avila as he avoids it easily.

Avila clinches up against the cage.
Joyce with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Avila is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Joyce can't fight it off and eventually Avila manages to take the fight to the floor. Joyce looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Joyce trying to keep a closed guard but Avila is proving a slippery customer.
Avila slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Avila decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Joyce is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Avila's half guard.
Avila tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Joyce manages to move to mount!

Joyce takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Joyce will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Joyce postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Avila looks a forlorn figure.
Joyce takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Avila tries to hold on but Joyce postures up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Joyce cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Joyce content just to control the position here.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Joyce takes Avila's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Avila is in trouble.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Joyce will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Avila stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Avila wants it to stay on the feet.

Joyce really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Joyce shoots in for a takedown but Avila shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carter Joyce. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Avila bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Joyce is trying to control Avila's posture but Avila avoids it.
Joyce tries to buck Avila off but Avila is having none of it.
Joyce sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Joyce keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Avila wants to free his trapped foot but Joyce is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Joyce has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Avila can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Joyce looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Joyce is looking for a triangle but Avila pushes his legs off easily.
Avila sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Avila stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Joyce swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Joyce controls Avila momentarily but Avila frees himself.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Joyce holds on and takes a little breather.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Canelo Avila showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Nice takedown defense from Avila. No joy for Joyce on that attempt.

Avila changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Joyce looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Joyce gets caught napping as Avila dives in and scores a takedown. Joyce manages to retain guard.

Avila with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Joyce is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Joyce looking to hit a scissor sweep but Avila is one step ahead there.

Joyce is really struggling to control Avila but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Joyce is trying to maintain the position but Avila is very close to passing his half guard.
Joyce wants to control the action here but instead Avila manages to pass to full mount!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Avila wants to control the pace but Joyce is squirming around nicely.
Joyce wants to control but Avila is having none of it.
Avila has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Joyce is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Avila is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Canelo Avila comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Avila has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
