PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Michael Cole (ranked 331 p4p, 46 weight class) and Tyler Cage (ranked 402 p4p, 59 weight class). Cole comes into the arena with I Won't Back Down blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Michael Cole!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyler Cage!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cage rushes Cole and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
A short left from Cage.

Cage pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Cole shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Cage really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cole. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Cole lands strikes from half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cole connects with a nice short shot to Cage's temple.
Cage keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Cage tries to kick Cole off but Cole keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Cole is looking to take a break and control but Cage is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cole thows a huge punch but Cage dodges it nicely.
Cole winds up and cracks Cage with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Cole is trying to control. Cage wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Cage has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Cage has hold of Cole's hands but Cole slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Cole looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cage with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Cole thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Cage keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Cage avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Cole.
Cole slips a nice elbow through Cage's hands, connecting with Cage's forehead.

Cage tries to get to full guard but Cole has control of the leg.
Cage wants to control but Cole is keeping busy.
Cage tries to roll over but Cole keeps him under control.

Cage wants to improve his position but Cole is controlling well.
Cole is stalling here. Cage is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Cole seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Cage has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
You can see the frustration on Cole's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Cole is looking to regain half guard here but Cage keeps moving and retains side control.
Cole wants to control but Cage postures up.
Cage wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cole keeps working.
Cole tries to buck Cage off but Cage is having none of it.

Cage has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Cage scores with the left hand. Cole knows he should have avoided that one.
A slow jab from Cage misses its intended target.
Cage takes a swing at Cole's ribcage but misses.
Cage scores with a jab. Cole acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Cage has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Cole finds it's way round the side to connect with Cage's head.
Cole throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Cole fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cage manages to avoid it.
Cage is looking to chop away at Cole's legs.
Cage on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Cage jabbing away but nothing is landing.
It looked like Cole wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
We've been told by Cole's head coaches at Official UFC Performance Institute Training Center that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Cole moves forwards but Cage connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Cage attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
An attempted straight right counter from Cole misses the target.
Cage misses with a wild body shot.
Cage will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
As Cage tries to get set, Cole tries to push him back and clinch up but Cage manages to avoid the attempt.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Cole scores with the left hand. Cage knows he should have avoided that one.
Cage throws a hook but Cole blocks it.
Cole takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Tyler Cage seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cage shoots in and gets a takedown into Cole's guard.
Cole wants to sweep but no luck.
Cage wants to control from the top but Cole keeps moving.

Cole connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Cage momentarily.
Cage throws a shot from downtown. Cole moves away and avoids it.
Tyler Cage seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Cole tries to clinch there but Cage circles away.
Cage throws a poor cross that misses
and Cole counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Cage tries to bum rush Cole with a series of wild strikes but Cole uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Cole was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Cole avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Cole tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cage defends well and Cole ends up having to push Cage into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Cage takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Cole takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Cage drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Cage has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Cole has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Cage finds it's way round the side to connect with Cole's head.

Cage uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cole.
Cage throws a front kick aimed at Cole's knee but Cole avoids it well.
Cage throws a leg kick which misses Cole's front leg but catches the back leg as Cole tries to avoid it.
Cage lands a really nice looking cross but Cole seems unphased.
Cage misses with a low kick as Cole jumps back.
No joy there for Cage, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Cage misses with a wild combination.
Cole scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Cage throws the left hand but Cole avoids the punch easily.

Cole was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Cole cracks Cage with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Cole throws a hook to the side of Cage's head but Cage sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Tyler Cage showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Cole looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Cole lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Cage shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cole changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cage tries to avoid it but Cole manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cage to the ground. Cage escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Cole keeps control of Cage as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
