PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Todd Packer (ranked 1481 p4p, 223 weight class) and Robert McKenna (ranked 2393 p4p, 330 weight class). McKenna is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Freedom. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Todd Packer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Robert McKenna!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKenna fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Packer avoids it really well and circles away.
Packer misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from McKenna.
Packer looks to land a body kick but McKenna moved away.
Packer lands the left hand.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that McKenna has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Packer lands a straight punch to the body, keeping McKenna at a distance.
Packer throws a body shot but no joy.

McKenna shoots in and bounces Packer off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

McKenna has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

McKenna seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Packer does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

McKenna wants to free his trapped foot but Packer is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
McKenna stalling away here and it's allowed Packer to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Packer is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Packer looking to sit in guard and control but McKenna gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

McKenna looks to land a strike but Packer avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Packer looking for a sweep. Not yet Packer, not yet.

McKenna postures up in Packer's guard and throws a big left but Packer blocks it.
McKenna is looking to advance position but Packer has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Packer unloads with some shots from mount but McKenna bucks and avoids them well.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Packer misses with some ground and pound and McKenna recovers position to half guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Todd Packer will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

It appears Packer was looking to counter with a kick there.

and McKenna counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

McKenna throws a strike aimed at the side of Packer's head but Packer avoids it well.

McKenna is looking to take a break and control but Packer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
You can see the frustration on Packer's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
McKenna scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Packer to see if he's OK.

Packer is trying to control but can't.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Packer is controlling McKenna's trapped leg to prevent McKenna from advancing to side control.
McKenna wants to control but Packer is keeping him busy.
McKenna is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
McKenna uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Packer.
McKenna sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown but Packer shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Packer pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
McKenna tries to close the distance and clinch but Packer swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Packer cracks a nice hook into McKenna's ribs.
Packer is looking to wear down McKenna with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
McKenna sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Packer fails to land with a series of punches.
McKenna is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
McKenna tries to bum rush Packer with a series of wild strikes but Packer uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
McKenna misses with a takedown attempt - Packer sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Todd Packer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert McKenna.
Packer connects with a body shot that sends McKenna's belly button to the back.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Packer but Packer pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Packer quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
McKenna tries to clinch but Packer is having none of it.

Robert McKenna seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

McKenna shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Packer is trying to defend but McKenna finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

It looks like Robert McKenna has been cut.
McKenna wants to clinch but Packer slips to the side
and Packer cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

McKenna tries to close the distance and clinch up but Packer swats him away and circles back towards the center.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Todd Packer dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Robert McKenna's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

McKenna manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Packer on his heels. He'll look to pass Packer's guard now, I'm sure.

Packer is trying to defend against the ground and pound but McKenna scores with a couple of nice shots.
Still in half guard, McKenna seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Packer wants to get back to full guard but McKenna has passed into side control.
McKenna tries to move to mount but Packer blocks the move with his legs.

McKenna wants to lay and pray for a moment but Packer keeps working.

McKenna postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Packer looks a forlorn figure.
Packer wants to control but McKenna is having none of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Packer tries to get back to half guard but can't.

McKenna lands a couple of good shots and Packer has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

McKenna scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Robert McKenna has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
McKenna lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Todd Packer is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Robert McKenna comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Packer has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
