PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Henri Lafitte (ranked 261 p4p, 41 weight class) and Kassius Halo (ranked 423 p4p, 67 weight class). The key to victory for Henri Lafitte has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Henri Lafitte!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kassius Halo!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Joseph Jones and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lafitte lands a jab-cross combination.
Halo is trying hard to land a takedown here. Lafitte sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Halo staying out of range there.
Halo swings for the body but Lafitte moves out of range.
An attempted straight right counter from Lafitte misses the target.

Halo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Halo trying to control the position from guard on top but Lafitte is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Halo makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Lafitte preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Halo looking to sit in guard and control but Lafitte gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Halo is looking for a triangle but Lafitte pushes his legs off easily.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Halo isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Lafitte stacks Halo on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Lafitte!
Halo has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Lafitte remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Halo is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Lafitte knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Halo on the ground.

Lafitte has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Lafitte keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Halo misses with a jab to the body

and Lafitte counters with a crisp one two that drops Halo! Lafitte thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Halo to his feet! Halo is in big trouble!


Halo is rocked!
Kassius Halo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Halo darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Lafitte is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Brazilian Elite Team that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Halo throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The fighters are battling for position here. Lafitte manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Halo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lafitte swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Halo wants to control from the top but Lafitte keeps moving.
Halo in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Lafitte not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Halo working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Lafitte pulls Halo in to control the position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Lafitte is on top in guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Lafitte trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Halo has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Lafitte should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Halo has tightened it up now! Lafitte should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Kassius Halo!

In his post fight interview, Kassius Halo gave a big smile as he said 'There isn't a fighter alive that I cannot make submit or go to sleep on the mat. There's no guessing, i will take you down.'.
