PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dmitri Zaitsev (ranked 322 p4p, 17 weight class) and Jimi Powell (ranked 527 p4p, 31 weight class). Powell is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by 8 Mile. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jimi Powell was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dmitri Zaitsev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 29 - 20 - 2, fighting out of New York, Jimi Powell!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Colin Fotheringham and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Powell sizes up Zaitsev with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Powell lands with a kick to the temple. Zaitsev shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Zaitsev throws a body punch but Powell moves out of range.
We've been informed that Powell has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.

Zaitsev throws an elbow that misses. Powell uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Zaitsev's guard. Nice move by Powell!

Powell got a little sloppy there for a moment and Zaitsev has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Powell has managed to get both his arms back between Zaitsev's legs - danger averted.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Powell scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Powell on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Zaitsev jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit.

A looping hook to the body misses from Zaitsev. Powell does a little dance to reset his feet.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Zaitsev throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Powell.

Zaitsev leaves Powell with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Zaitsev wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Powell throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Powell connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Zaitsev takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
I was talking to Zaitsev's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

I would just about give that final round to Jimi Powell.
