PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gary Day (ranked 2430 p4p, 257 weight class) and Rico Cole (ranked 3119 p4p, 0 weight class). Day comes to the cage accompanied by Last minute - Great day to choke you out. Cole comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Gerardo's Rico Suave kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Rico Cole enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 14 - 3, fighting out of Helsinki, Gary Day!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Rico Cole!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cole throws a shot from downtown. Day moves away and avoids it.
Day is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Cole tries to close the distance and clinch but Day swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Day is looking to counter with a body kick.
Cole misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Day takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Rico Cole seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cole fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Day manages to avoid it.
Cole has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Day is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Cole throws a right and a left that both miss.
Cole swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Cole moves into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Day goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Day tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Cole's elbow.
Cole lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Cole pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Cole darts in and clinches Day up against the cage.
Day jumps guard but Cole stands there with Day around his waist. Day gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A head punch on the inside from Cole fails to land.
Day tries for a takedown but Cole manages to get underhooks.

Cole breaks from the clinch.
Cole throws a head kick that misses
and Day counters with a nice uppercut.
Day fails with the takedown
and Cole counters with a straight right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gary Day. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Some wild striking there from Cole.
Cole lands a front kick.
Cole scores with a jab to the head.
Cole lands with a nice combination. Day backs away looking to recover.


It looks like Gary Day has been cut.
Rico Cole is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
No joy there for Cole, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Day bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Cole moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Cole moves into the clinch.
Day is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Day lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Ground and pound from Day.
Cole preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cole trying to control here.
Cole blocking the ground and pound attempt from Day.
Cole is looking to improve his position.
Day scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Day not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Cole won't allow Day to pass to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cole makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cole.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cole is on top in guard.

Cole stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Day swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Day looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cole is one step ahead there.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Cole trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Cole not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rico Cole dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Gary Day's cut.
That's time! Back to the action!


Cole throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Day.
Day on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Cole. Cole obviously looking to wear him down.
Cole scores with a decent looking hook.
Cole lands with a slapping head kick.
Day throws a half hearted mid kick.
Day misses the body punch
and Cole counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Day takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Day takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Cole lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.


Day is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cole throws a predictable looking body shot
and Day counters with a two punch combo.
Oh Day is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Day throws a jab when Cole was well out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Day throws an off balance right hand

and Cole counters with a nice right hand that sends Day toppling to the canvas! Day scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Cole finish him?!
Cole cracks Day with a big right hand that sees him stumbling back against the cage! Day falls to his knees and Cole doesn't need a second invitatation - he rushes in and fires off several unanswered shots that force the referee to stop the fight! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:15 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Rico Cole!
Our winner, Rico Cole, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
