TWGC 22 (170lbs, D1): Tokyo Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a welterweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Lowe Joazan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antonio Camatta (ranked 655 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Joazan might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to The Sound of Silence. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Lowe Joazan! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 10 losses; Antonio Camatta!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Hirohito Nitta and Yasuomi Hirokawa.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Camatta shoots in and gets a takedown into Joazan's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Camatta avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Joazan is looking for a triangle here but Camatta uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Camatta is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Joazan will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Joazan is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Camatta off and has taken his back!

Joazan has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Camatta has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Camatta is having to fend off submission attempts from Joazan, who is looking to sink in the choke. Joazan doesn't have the hooks in though and Camatta manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

My spies in DJs Locker inform me that Camatta has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Joazan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Camatta gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Camatta takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Camatta has good solid back control here.
You can see the frustration on Joazan's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Joazan breaks Camatta's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Joazan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Camatta swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Joazan wants to control from the top but Camatta keeps moving.

Camatta isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Joazan stacks Camatta on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Joazan!

Joazan thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Camatta manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Camatta slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Joazan works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Joazan is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Joazan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Camatta does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Camatta is positioning himself well to prevent Joazan advancing to mount.
Camatta is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Camatta is not content to let Joazan control the position.

Camatta is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Joazan pulls his head out easily.
Joazan wants to advance to full mount but Camatta doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Camatta pulls Joazan in close to his closed guard and prevents Joazan from doing any damage or advancing position.

Joazan tries to free his leg and advance position but Camatta is retaining full guard.

Camatta has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Joazan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Joazan is on top in guard.

Joazan has gone for a leg lock! Camatta slips out almost immediately though and dives into Joazan's guard.

Joazan can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Camatta controls the pace.
It looks like Camatta might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Camatta is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Joazan doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Camatta.

Camatta wins on points by 19 to 11.
Antonio Camatta was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
