PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Huang (ranked 567 p4p, 68 weight class) and Zain Retherford (ranked 1641 p4p, 176 weight class). Huang's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Nelly - The Champ. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zain Retherford!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Dmitry Maklakov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Retherford blocks a body shot from Huang.

Huang gets through Retherford's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Huang misses with the head strike.
Huang misses with a punch to the body.
Huang has a couple of punches blocked by Retherford.
Retherford keeps control of Huang as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Huang throws a head punch that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Huang wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Retherford has him pressed against the cage.

Retherford has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Huang regains guard immediately.

Huang has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Huang is on top in guard.

Retherford wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Huang slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Retherford takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Huang advances nicely into full mount.

Huang swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Retherford is now in Huang's guard. A big mistake from Huang there, giving up the dominant position!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Retherford postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

My spies in Just Scrap MMA and BJJ inform me that Retherford has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Huang bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Retherford's guard.

We've been hearing good reports from Huang's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Huang stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Retherford swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Huang is looking to advance position but Retherford won't allow it.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Huang lands a nice short elbow.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Retherford is defended easily by Huang.
Retherford swats away the attempt to clinch by Huang.
Huang looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Retherford swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Retherford ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Huang avoids the body shot from Retherford.
Huang is looking to counter the offense by Retherford and move into the clinch.
Retherford throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Retherford cracks Huang with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Huang loads up on a big right hand but Retherford slips the punch.
Retherford scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Huang doesn't seem bothered though.
Huang stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Huang wants it to stay on the feet.
Huang is trying hard to land a takedown here. Retherford sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Huang tries to clinch up but Retherford circles away and keeps his distance.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Huang. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Retherford throws a shot from downtown. Huang moves away and avoids it.

and Retherford cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Retherford throws an overhand right that lands on Huang's shoulder, as Huang tries to avoid the shot.
Huang tries to close the distance and clinch up but Retherford swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Retherford throws a body shot but no joy.
Retherford throws a body punch but Huang moves out of range.
Huang gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Retherford keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

and Retherford counters with a single leg into guard. Huang didn't expect that.
Retherford throws a big elbow that misses.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Huang working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Retherford doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Retherford manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Huang is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Retherford rolls with it to try and escape but Huang cranks on the arm and Retherford is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
