PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Shamil Gasanov (ranked 24104 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniello Pablo (ranked 3694 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Shamil Gasanov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 31 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Daniello Pablo!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Igor Prikhodko and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pablo rushes Gasanov and presses him up against the cage.
Pablo prevents the takedown attempt.
Gasanov could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gasanov is trying to pull guard but Pablo has him pressed against the cage.

Gasanov manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Pablo gets to his feet - Gasanov follows without any prompting.

Pablo closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gasanov to the mat! Gasanov manages to get full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pablo's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gasanov is trying to control the position but Pablo postures up.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Pablo working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Gasanov is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Pablo not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Pablo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gasanov swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gasanov is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Pablo slips a nice elbow through Gasanov's hands, connecting with Gasanov's forehead.

Pablo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Pablo decides to stand up.

Pablo darts in and clinches Gasanov up against the cage.

Pablo has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Gasanov uses from the top position.

Pablo is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Pablo kicks Gasanov off and gets to his feet.

Pablo closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gasanov quickly recovers to half guard.
Gasanov is trying to escape back to his feet but Pablo uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Pablo works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Gasanov has closed the distance and engaged Pablo in a clinch.
Gasanov is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Pablo's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
A short body shot lands from Pablo as the two fighters clinch.

A frustrated look appears on Gasanov's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Pablo jumps guard and drags Gasanov to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Pablo has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Gasanov is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Gasanov wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Gasanov is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Pablo is defending well.

Pablo pulls Gasanov into guard.

Pablo uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Pablo clinches up with Gasanov and pushes him back against the cage.

Pablo closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Gasanov is defending against the submission attempts here by Pablo.
Pablo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Pablo seems to be working for a kimura but Gasanov defends the submission attempt.

Pablo is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gasanov sees it coming and defends easily.

Pablo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Pablo decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Pablo bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gasanov tries to strike but it doesn't land.
Daniello Pablo has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gasanov tries to bench press Pablo off him but Pablo keeps the position.

Pablo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Pablo has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Pablo swats away the attempt to clinch by Gasanov.

Pablo fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gasanov to the ground. Pablo is now in Gasanov's guard.
Gasanov wants to get back to his feet but Pablo passes into half guard.
Pablo is controlling the pace.
Gasanov has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pablo is working away from the top position though.

Pablo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Daniello Pablo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Pablo moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Pablo is working to tighten his grip on Gasanov's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Gasanov has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Pablo is really squeezing tight and eventually Gasanov passes out! Pablo breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
