PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gary Tonon (ranked 45 p4p, 10 weight class) and Ozzy McKane (ranked 124 p4p, 22 weight class). Tonon's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, What About Now. McKane has chosen SAIL - AWOLNATION as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gary Tonon!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 43 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ozzy McKane!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Dillan Fox and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKane lands a nice hook to Tonon's body. Tonon takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
McKane loads up on a big right hand but Tonon slips the punch.
Tonon seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
A chopping leg kick lands by McKane.
McKane throws a leg kick but Tonon moved away.
Tonon was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
A punch lands to the side of Tonon 's head but he takes it in his stride.
McKane gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Tonon counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
McKane lands a leg kick that knocks Tonon off balance momentarily.
McKane lands a front kick.
McKane slips a jab and a cross from Tonon.
McKane lands with a thumping leg kick.

Tonon shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. McKane is trying to defend but Tonon finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tonon passes the guard and advances to mount!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tonon trying to control but McKane is having none of it.
McKane is desperately trying to improve his position but Tonon has a good base and remains in mount.
McKane is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Tonon with good strikes from the mount here!
Tonon wants to control the pace but McKane is squirming around nicely.
McKane tries to hold on but Tonon postures up.
McKane working to try and regain half guard.
McKane slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

McKane is looking for a sweep. Tonon is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

McKane looking for submissions off his back.
Tonon thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Tonon wants to pass the guard but McKane is defending well.
Tonon tries to stand but can't do so whilst McKane controls his leg.
Tonon seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
McKane wants to control but Tonon is keeping busy.
McKane makes his way to full guard. A much better position for McKane.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tonon trying to control the position from guard on top but McKane is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tonon tries to free his leg and advance position but McKane is retaining full guard.

McKane is looking for a triangle but Tonon pushes his legs off easily.
McKane keeping moving, preventing Tonon from controlling successfully.
Our spies down at at Convicted Fight Club inform us that McKane has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Tonon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKane swivels though and keeps the full guard.

McKane looking for a guillotine here but Tonon defends easily.
Tonon slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Tonon trying to control the position from guard on top but McKane is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tonon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKane swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
McKane moves away from the strike by Tonon.
Tonon is looking to clinch but McKane is avoiding it.
Tonon closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
McKane throws a body shot but no joy.
Tonon went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
McKane misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Tonon lands an overhand right.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Gary Tonon will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Tonon slips under a jab.


It looks like Ozzy McKane has been cut.
McKane getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Tonon throws a jab when McKane was well out of range.
And McKane tries to counter it with a takedown but Tonon pushes his down on his head and steps out.
McKane throws a low kick but it's checked well by Tonon.
It looked like Tonon wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
McKane connects with a looping right hand.
McKane misses with a left hand
and Tonon counters with a nice uppercut.
McKane jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Tonon swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

McKane shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Tonon is trying to defend but McKane finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tonon wants to control but McKane is keeping busy and won't allow it.

McKane is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

McKane seems to be looking for submissions.

McKane looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with McKane in particular looking to stall.
McKane is trying to control. Tonon wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
McKane tries to pass to full mount but Tonon defends it.
McKane is trying to control the action in half guard but Tonon is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Gary Tonon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Tonon is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
McKane wants to take a breather but Tonon is having none of it.
McKane looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

McKane seems to be working for a kimura but Tonon defends the submission attempt.
McKane stops Tonon from getting back to his feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McKane looks to throw the jab but Tonon is out of range.
Tonon appears to be looking for a big counter.
Tonon keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from McKane.
McKane throws a leg kick but Tonon moved away.
McKane misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
McKane throws a right hand that misses
and McKane takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Tonon misses with a straight left.
Gary Tonon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

McKane throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Tonon was covering up waiting for the punch and McKane finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Tonon has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. McKane has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McKane digs a right hand into Tonon's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Tonon's gas tank.
Tonon tries to pull guard but McKane holds him up against the cage and eventually Tonon drops back down to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McKane looking for a takedown.
I was talking to Tonon's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Tonon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
McKane throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Tonon swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
McKane throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Tonon counters with a left and a right that stings McKane.
Tonon on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by McKane. McKane obviously looking to wear him down.

McKane shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than McKane was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Tonon throws McKane to one side and escapes!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gary Tonon will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Ozzy McKane's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Tonon looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
McKane feints the counter takedown.
McKane lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.

Tonon forces McKane back against the cage and clinches.
Tonon is pressed up against the cage. McKane has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Tonon down to the mat. Tonon avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
McKane connects with a jab.
McKane missing with a left hand there. Tonon was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Tonon appears to be looking for a big counter.
Tonon takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Tonon throws a lazy uppercut
and McKane counters with a stiff right hand.
McKane scores with a jab.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McKane throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
McKane works the jab nicely.

McKane misses with a low kick.
Tonon swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Tonon scores with a hook to the body. McKane takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
A swing and a miss from McKane.
Tonon seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
McKane misses the jab.
A telegraphed right hand from McKane misses the target.
McKane throws a right hand that misses
and Tonon counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Ozzy McKane seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Tonon moves away from the strike by McKane.
Tonon tries to clinch but McKane is having none of it.
McKane misses with an uppercut.
A little feinted left hand from Tonon on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
McKane throws a right hand that misses
and McKane takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Tonon missing with a left hand there. McKane was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Good work by Tonon as he checks the leg kick.
McKane drops his hands momentarily and Tonon takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
McKane misses with a body kick.
Tonon drops down looking for a counter takedown but McKane sprawls and moves away.
A slow jab from Tonon misses its intended target.
McKane uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Tonon.
McKane misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
An attempted straight right counter from Tonon misses the target.
Tonon avoids the body shot from McKane.
Tonon avoids a kick to the body.
Tonon was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
McKane misses with a left hand
and Tonon counters with a straight that turns McKane's legs to rubber! Tonon pushes forward with more strikes and McKane goes down, battered and bloody! That's a wrap folks!

Gary Tonon decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
