PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joan Vila (ranked 1976 p4p, 202 weight class) and Matheus Knorr (ranked 3908 p4p, 379 weight class). Matheus Knorr is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Joan Vila!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Knorr!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Josh West and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Knorr darts in looking for a takedown but Vila gets double underhooks and turns Knorr into the cage.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Knorr is defended easily by Vila.
Vila stuns Knorr with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Knorr fails with the takedown
and Vila connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Joan Vila has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matheus Knorr.

It looks like Matheus Knorr has been cut.

and Vila counters with a right hand that sends Knorr tumbling to the canvas! Can Vila finish him? He dives into Knorr's guard looking to do just that!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Vila drops back looking for a leg! Knorr is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Knorr manages to kick Vila off! Vila jumps back into Knorr's guard.

Vila is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Knorr seems to have recovered his senses.

Vila is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Vila seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Knorr is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Vila wants to lay and pray for a moment but Knorr keeps working.
Knorr wants to improve his position but Vila is controlling well.

Knorr is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Vila pulls his head out easily.
Vila wants to pass the guard but Knorr is defending well.

Vila is looking for a kimura but Knorr is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Vila to get the leverage.

Knorr is defending against the submission attempts here by Vila.

Vila is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Knorr doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Vila.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Vila moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Knorr.
Vila wants to control but Knorr is keeping him busy.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Knorr tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joan Vila dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Matheus Knorr's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

enabling Vila to counter with a crisp jab.

Vila leaves Knorr with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A nice inside leg kick there by Vila. That's going to slow Knorr down.
Vila displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Knorr.
Vila attempts a counter takedown but Knorr avoids it well and moves away.

Vila connects with a jab.
Knorr shoots in looking for a takedown. Vila tries to sprawl out of it but Knorr keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Vila manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vila throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Knorr stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Vila seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Vila comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Knorr is breathing heavily.

Vila drops Knorr with a left right combo! Vila follows him down to the ground into side control.
Vila has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Knorr!

Knorr is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Vila has taken his back.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Knorr is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Vila gets his way!

Knorr turns into Vila and is now in his guard.
Vila is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Knorr can do to turn this around?

Knorr has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Vila to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Knorr is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Vila pulls down on the head and he's put Knorr to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Joan Vila!
