PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Royce Brandau (ranked 5605 p4p, 475 weight class) and Eli Peterson (ranked 9551 p4p, 586 weight class). Eli Peterson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Royce Brandau!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Eli Peterson!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brandau misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Peterson gets a clinch.
Peterson lands a right hand that snaps the head of Brandau backwards.
Stalling in the clinch from Brandau.
Peterson wants to get back to striking at distance but Brandau won't allow it.
Brandau is looking to control Peterson's arms but Peterson gets an underhook and turns him. Now Brandau has his back to the cage.
Brandau keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Peterson's efforts to push away.

Peterson successfully pulls guard.
Brandau wants to control from the top but Peterson keeps moving.
Brandau tries to stand but Peterson is controlling from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brandau lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Peterson wants to sweep but no luck.
Peterson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brandau. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Brandau is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Peterson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Peterson is looking for a triangle but Brandau pushes his legs off easily.
Peterson is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Brandau is controlling him.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Brandau fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Brandau drives through and clinches with Peterson against the cage.

Peterson wants to control from the top but Brandau keeps moving.
Brandau is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brandau is on top in guard.

Brandau stays in close to Peterson's body and controls the position.
Brandau is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brandau content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Brandau thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Brandau wants to stand but Peterson has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Brandau looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Brandau lands a couple of digs.
Brandau postures up.
Peterson has a closed guard, preventing Brandau from standing up.
Brandau has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Peterson is pulling down on Brandau's head to control his posture.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Brandau counters with a nice double leg into side control. Peterson won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Peterson's face as Brandau controls the position.

Brandau is looking to take a break and control but Peterson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Peterson throws a shot to the body.
Peterson tries to clinch but Brandau moves out of range.
No luck for Brandau with that takedown attempt.
Peterson lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Brandau circles away quickly and effectively.
Brandau is looking to counter the offense by Peterson and move into the clinch.
Brandau is looking to chop away at Peterson's legs.
Eli Peterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Peterson misses with a wild combination.
Peterson throws a body shot but no joy.
Peterson throws a leg kick that misses.

Brandau gets a takedown into half guard.

Brandau looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Peterson wants to get back to his feet.

Brandau is trying to control. Peterson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Peterson is trying to get back to full guard.
Brandau wants to get back to his feet.
Brandau content to control rather than advance.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Brandau is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brandau is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Peterson trying to control but Brandau postures up.
Brandau wants to control but Peterson is keeping him busy.
Brandau uses his free foot to push down on Peterson's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Peterson.

Brandau wants to control the pace but Peterson is squirming around nicely.

Brandau is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Peterson knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Peterson for a finish.
Peterson is trying to break free.

Brandau is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Peterson has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Brandau has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Peterson taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Brandau doesn't care though - he's delighted!
