PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jason Gregory (ranked 6757 p4p, 295 weight class) and Ryan Lentz (ranked 5521 p4p, 255 weight class). The key to victory for Jason Gregory has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jason Gregory!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ryan Lentz!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Chad Campbell and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gregory fails with the takedown.
Gregory tries for a takedown but Lentz circles away easily

and Lentz counters with a takedown into side control.
Lentz is trying to ground and pound but Gregory uses the momentary lack of control by Lentz to regain half guard.
Lentz winds up and cracks Gregory with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Lentz thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Gregory's head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lentz wants to pass the guard but Gregory is defending well.
Lentz missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Lentz is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Lentz prevents Gregory from improving his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lentz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Gregory tries to kick Lentz off but Lentz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Well, if Lentz is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Lentz thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Lentz fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gregory to the ground. Lentz is now in Gregory's guard.

Gregory is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Gregory is fighting off a takedown attempt but Lentz is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Gregory to the mat. Gregory regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Gregory manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Lentz looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Gregory shoots and misses

and Lentz counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Gregory manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Gregory. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Lentz has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Gregory clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Gregory rolls, trying to escape but Lentz keeps control of the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lentz is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
Let's hope that Lentz has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Gregory trying to control the action but Lentz just sinks the hooks in.
Gregory is trying to break free.
Lentz keeps control of the position easily here as Gregory tries to buck him off.
Lentz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gregory. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Lentz working for a choke but Gregory is defending well.
Gregory is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jason Gregory will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Lentz looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Gregory has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Lentz has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Lentz gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Gregory regains guard.
Lentz must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gregory wants to sweep here but Lentz controlling him for the moment.
Lentz content to stall in guard here.
Gregory throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Lentz is stalling in the full guard.

Lentz throws a big elbow that misses.
Lentz trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Lentz trying to control but Gregory is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Lentz throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gregory was covering up waiting for the punch and Lentz finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Gregory wants to get back to his feet but Lentz is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Lentz trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Lentz controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Gregory is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lentz is aware though and is defending well.

Gregory looking for a guillotine here but Lentz defends easily.

Lentz drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gregory manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Lentz has Gregory in his guard.

Lentz keeping moving, preventing Gregory from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lentz is pulling down on Gregory's head to control his posture.
Gregory stops Lentz from standing up.
Gregory wants to control from the top but Lentz keeps moving.
Lentz preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Lentz throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gregory tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Lentz is in Gregory's guard.
Lentz controlling from the top position.
Gregory controls Lentz momentarily but Lentz frees himself.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gregory wants to stand and escape but Lentz is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ryan Lentz will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Gregory is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gregory keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Lentz is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Gregory is trying to maintain the position but Lentz is very close to passing his half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

and Lentz counters with a shoot takedown. Gregory fights it but they end up in guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Lentz sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Gregory looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Lentz forces his way into half guard.
Lentz slows the pace down in half guard.
Gregory is trying to control but Lentz passes into side control!

Lentz wants to control but Gregory is keeping him busy.
Lentz sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Gregory is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Lentz is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Gregory's shoulder. That is not cool.
Lentz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gregory keeps working.
Gregory can't do much from the bottom here.
Lentz is staying tight to Gregory's torso, preventing him from escaping.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lentz advances nicely into full mount.
Lentz controlling from the full mount.
Lentz throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Gregory takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Gregory is in all sorts of trouble here.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gregory is squirming around, avoiding Lentz's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ryan Lentz comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lentz has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
