TWGC 18 (265lbs, D2): Sydney Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a heavyweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Hugo Lewis (ranked 3698 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bastien Harris (ranked 2303 p4p, 295 weight class). Harris is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Du Hast. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Bastien Harris enters the cage!

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 1 losses; Hugo Lewis! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 2 losses; Bastien Harris!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and John Mangel.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Harris forces Lewis back against the cage and clinches.

Harris drags the fight down to the ground.
Lewis wants to control from the top but Harris keeps moving.
Harris keeping full guard, as Lewis tries to pass.
Harris has his hands on Lewis's head, controlling the position.
Lewis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Harris is pulling down on Lewis's head. It's preventing any offense from Lewis, at least for the moment.

Harris keeping moving, preventing Lewis from controlling successfully.
Lewis tries to free his leg and advance position but Harris is retaining full guard.
Harris wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Lewis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Lewis passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Lewis is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Harris will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Lewis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Harris keeps working.

Lewis wants to control but Harris is keeping him busy.

The referee asks Lewis politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lewis prefers to stall for the moment though.
Harris is not content to let Lewis control the position.
Harris is trying to control Lewis's posture but Lewis avoids it.
Lewis content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Lewis has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Lewis taking a break here but Harris is having none of it and regains half guard.
Harris tries to roll over but Lewis keeps him under control.

Lewis tries to pass to full mount but Harris defends it.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Harris is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Harris manages to get to full guard.
Harris can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lewis controls the pace.
Lewis trying to control the position from guard on top but Harris is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Lewis looking to sit in guard and control but Harris gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

My spies in White Lotus inform me that Harris has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Harris is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Lewis is adopting a defensive guard.

Lewis looking to hit a scissor sweep but Harris is one step ahead there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lewis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Harris preventing the sweep.
Harris is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Harris's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Harris stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lewis swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Lewis is controlling Harris's posture.

Lewis wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Lewis's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Lewis can't keep his opponent in guard - Harris advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Lewis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Harris is working away from the top position though.
Well, if Harris is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Lewis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lewis takes the fight on points by 3 to 2.
Hugo Lewis was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
Bastien Harris spoke after the fight, saying 'After this loss i think i will go home and hang myself now , goodbye'.
