PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Obi Canuel (ranked 1562 p4p, 208 weight class) and Hector Davis (ranked 1209 p4p, 165 weight class). Davis comes into a darkened arena with his song building. In to Deep kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Obi Canuel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hector Davis!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, George Francis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Canuel displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Davis.
Davis lands with a shot to the body.
Canuel throws a jab when Davis was well out of range.
And Davis tries to counter it with a takedown but Canuel pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Davis misses with a body shot.
Davis blocks a head kick by Canuel.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis loads up on a big right hand but Canuel slips the punch.
Canuel is looking to counter punch.

Davis shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Davis was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Davis trying to control the action but Canuel is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Davis is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Canuel will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Canuel is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.

Davis tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Davis has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
A lull in the action here.
My spies in *****AXE PACK***** inform me that Davis has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Davis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Canuel keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Davis is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Davis tries to advance to mount but can't.
Davis controlling from side mount.
Davis throws a strike aimed at the side of Canuel's head but Canuel avoids it well.
Davis trying to control the position but Canuel is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee asks Davis politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Davis prefers to stall for the moment though.
Canuel prevents Davis from moving into mount.
Canuel is not content to let Davis control the position.
Davis is staying tight to Canuel's torso, preventing him from escaping.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Davis moves out of range of the strikes.
Canuel lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.


It looks like Hector Davis has been cut.

Davis closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Davis trying to control the action but Canuel is working from the bottom.

Davis tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Canuel is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Davis has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Canuel prevents Davis from improving position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Davis in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Davis tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hector Davis dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Hector Davis's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A combination from Canuel does no damage.
Davis dives in and grabs Canuel's left leg, looking for a takedown. Canuel pushes down on Davis's head and hops out.
Canuel throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Davis sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Davis shoots for a double leg takedown but Canuel sprawls well. He's pushed Davis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Canuel pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Davis tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Davis looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Davis content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Canuel is trying to stand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Davis is controlling the pace.

Davis is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Davis is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Davis takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Canuel is trying to stand up here but Davis is controlling him well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Canuel throws the left hand but Davis avoids the punch easily.
Canuel throws a one two combo.
Canuel cracks Davis with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Davis darts in looking for a takedown but Canuel gets double underhooks and turns Davis into the cage.
Canuel is looking to counter punch.
Obi Canuel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hector Davis.

Davis misses with an uppercut.
Canuel scores with a nice right hand.
Davis dives in for a single leg takedown but Canuel sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Canuel throws a series of punches but Davis moves out of range.
And Davis tries to counter it with a takedown but Canuel pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Canuel throws a lazy right hand but Davis sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Davis tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Davis throws a hook to the side of Canuel's head but Canuel sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Canuel was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Canuel throws a right and a left that both miss.
Davis changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Obi Canuel is winning the standup battle so far.
Canuel throws a shot from downtown. Davis moves away and avoids it.
Davis slips a jab from Canuel.
Davis tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Davis misses with a straight right.
Canuel jabs Davis right on the nose. Davis blinks but takes it well.
Canuel swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Canuel avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Canuel misses with a hook. Davis ducked under it nicely.
Davis drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Canuel defends it well.
Canuel lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
A jab from Canuel finds it's way through Davis's defenses.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davis avoids a punch combination nicely.
Davis shoots and misses
and Canuel counters with a straight right hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


The fighters circling - Davis throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Canuel was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Davis dives in and grabs Canuel's left leg, looking for a takedown. Canuel pushes down on Davis's head and hops out.
Davis closes the distance and clinches up with Canuel, looking for a takedown. Davis pushes Canuel against the cage but Canuel circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
A nice leg kick lands there from Canuel.
Canuel is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Canuel throws out a powerful jab.
Canuel is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Davis cracks Canuel with a good jab.
Canuel fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Davis manages to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis throws an overhand right that lands on Canuel's shoulder, as Canuel tries to avoid the shot.

Davis clinches up with Canuel and pushes him back against the cage.
Davis jumps guard but Canuel stands there with Davis around his waist. Davis gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Obi Canuel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hector Davis.

Canuel lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Davis backwards.
Canuel scores with a nice hook to the head.
Canuel trying to land knees to the body.
Davis tries to pull guard but Canuel won't allow it.
Canuel throws a punch but it's blocked by Davis.
Canuel misses with a short punch on the inside.
Canuel misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Davis.
Canuel looking to throw knees to the head but Davis is blocking nicely.
Davis wants to take the fight to the mat but Canuel manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Canuel tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Davis turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Canuel is looking to reverse the position.
Hector Davis has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Davis working the ground and pound.
Canuel gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Davis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Let's hope that Davis has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Canuel is bucking up trying to escape but Davis cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Davis controlling the position easily from mount.
Davis is continuing to stall.

Canuel squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Davis lands with some strikes.
Davis controlling his opponent.
Davis trying to control but Canuel is having none of it.
Davis unloads with some shots from mount but Canuel bucks and avoids them well.
Davis looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Canuel wants to hold on but Davis pushes him away.
Davis looking to control but Canuel is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Davis controlling the pace for now.
Davis looking to finish with strikes here!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Davis cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Davis has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Canuel's face.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hector Davis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Davis has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
