The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gumption throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Gumption has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Simmons misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Simmons lands a right hook to the body.
Simmons moves out of range of the body kick.
Simmons throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Brandon Simmons seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Gumption counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Simmons goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Simmons stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Gumption.

Gumption takes the fight into the clinch.
A left hand lands to the body for Gumption.
Gumption lands with a left to the head.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Simmons takes a shot to the head.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Gumption blocks a punch to the side of the head.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Gumption.
Simmons misses with a short punch on the inside.

Gumption breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Simmons digs a good hook to Gumption's body.
Gumption takes a swing at Simmons's ribcage but misses.
Gumption with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Gumption ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Simmons moves away.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Simmons lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Gumption has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Gumption and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Simmons throws a sloppy head kick
and Gumption counters with a stiff right hand.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A slow jab from Simmons misses its intended target.
Gumption tries to land a front kick but Simmons steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Gumption misses with a hook. Simmons ducked under it nicely.
Simmons throws out a counter right but Gumption avoids it with no problem.
Gumption fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Simmons checks it well.
Gumption throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

It looks like Brandon Simmons has been cut.
Gumption thuds his right hand into Simmons's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Simmons crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Gumption - the referee stops the clock and Simmons gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Gumption. Simmons manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

and Gumption counters with a nice right hand that sends Simmons toppling to the canvas! Simmons scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Gumption finish him?!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Simmons gets tagged by a hook that puts him to sleep! Gumption points and yells something to his unconcious foe before strutting off. Simmons wakes up just in time to hear Gumption thank his coaches in the post fight interview.
