PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Danny Studge (ranked 1482 p4p, 167 weight class) and Johny Vargas (ranked 2233 p4p, 239 weight class). Vargas has chosen Drake - Trophies as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Danny Studge has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Danny Studge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johny Vargas!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Josh West and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vargas swinging wildly here.
Studge dips to his left and cracks Vargas with an uppercut!
A slow jab from Studge misses its intended target.
Vargas lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Studge backs up against the cage.
Vargas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Vargas throws a series of punches but Studge moves out of range.
Studge misses with a two punch combination.
And Vargas tries to counter it with a takedown but Studge pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Vargas.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vargas postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Studge is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vargas lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Vargas takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Oh Studge is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Vargas scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Studge seems to have got his legs back now.
Vargas lands a couple of good shots and Studge has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Vargas is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Studge looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Vargas shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Studge is trying to defend but Vargas finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Studge has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Vargas is working away from the top position though.

Studge is staying active underneath Vargas, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Vargas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Studge's head.
Vargas takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Vargas winds up and cracks Studge with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Studge knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Vargas on the ground.
Studge tries to kick Vargas off but Vargas keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Studge is staying active underneath Vargas, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Studge is trying to stand up here but Vargas is controlling him well.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johny Vargas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Studge tries to close the distance and clinch up but Vargas swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Vargas drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Studge defends it well.
Vargas looks to land a combination but Studge avoids it well.

Studge lands a left and a right that send Vargas crashing to the mat, dazed. Studge thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Studge misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Vargas moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Studge throws a hook but Vargas blocks it.
Vargas gets caught by a big overhand right and goes down! Studge gets on top of him and starts throwing some serious punches until the ref intervenes and stops the fight!

During a confident post fight interview, Danny Studge thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
