PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sol Dier (ranked 1334 p4p, 155 weight class) and Segey Taranin (ranked 1164 p4p, 142 weight class). Dier kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Soldier. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sol Dier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Segey Taranin!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dier pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Taranin looking to score a takedown here. Dier is defending well but Taranin drives through and ends up in Dier's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've been hearing good reports from Dier's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Taranin catches Dier with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

Taranin fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Dier, pushing him back against the cage.
The referee is keeping an eye on Taranin - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Dier can't break the clinch.
Taranin scores with a shoulder strike.

Dier breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Dier scores with a body shot.
The fighters circle momentarily. Dier darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dier swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Dier takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Dier circles away from the clinch attempt.
Taranin takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Dier scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Dier misses with a wild combination.
Dier takes a swing at Taranin's ribcage but misses.
Taranin lands a glancing blow to the side of Dier's head.
Dier dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Sol Dier is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Taranin throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Dier was covering up waiting for the punch and Taranin finishes the takedown easily into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Taranin stops Dier from standing up.
Dier preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Taranin trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Taranin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Dier's guard.

Taranin is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Dier doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Taranin.
Taranin throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Taranin is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Dier manages to escape and get back to his feet!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Sol Dier will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Dier throws a hook but Taranin avoids it easily.
Dier ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Taranin moves away.
Dier scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Taranin doesn't seem bothered though.
Taranin uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Dier.
Dier throws a body punch but Taranin moves out of range.

Taranin misses with a jab, cross combination.
Dier takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Dier throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Taranin drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Dier defends it well.
Taranin takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Dier ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Taranin moves away.
Taranin fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Taranin's corner calls for a 1-2. Taranin obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Taranin takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Taranin throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Dier on the side of the head.
Sol Dier seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Dier swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Dier is looking to wear down Taranin with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Dier throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Taranin steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Dier.
Dier takes a swing at Taranin's ribcage but misses.
A looping hook to the body misses from Dier. Taranin does a little dance to reset his feet.
Dier ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Taranin moves away.
Taranin is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

and Taranin counters with a nice double leg into side control. Dier won't be happy with that.

Taranin goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Dier rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Taranin's guard! Nice work there by Dier!
Dier keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Taranin's head.

Taranin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dier doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dier manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Taranin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Dier can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Taranin avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Dier throws a strike but Taranin rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Taranin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Dier wants to stand but Taranin is controlling the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Dier is really turning it up, unleashing another crisp combination which drops Taranin like a ton of bricks! The referee dives in to stop the fight, saving Taranin from another fist facial!
