PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Juan Vasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Jaa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vasquez comes to the cage accompanied by Battery. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Tony Jaa!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Daniel Franklin and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Donk. Jaa catches Vasquez right on the button with a cross.
We've been hearing reports that Vasquez has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Vasquez punishes Jaa's body with a nice straight punch.
Vasquez takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Jaa's coach down at Area51 was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Jaa's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Jaa throws an off balance right hand
and Vasquez counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Jaa fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Vasquez, pushing him back against the cage.
Jaa lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Jaa gets through Vasquez's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Jaa works on Vasquez's body with a couple of short punches.
Vasquez blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Vasquez goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Vasquez can't find room to land a body shot as Jaa controls the action.
Vasquez is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Jaa scores with a nice hook to the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Vasquez has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Jaa takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
A looping hook to the body misses from Vasquez. Jaa does a little dance to reset his feet.
Vasquez throws a hook but Jaa avoids it easily.
A nice side step and Jaa releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Vasquez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Jaa moves away.
Jaa throws out a counter right but Vasquez avoids it with no problem.
Jaa scores with a shot to the body.
Jaa cracks a nice hook into Vasquez's ribs.
Jaa slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Jaa scores with a jab to the jaw.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jaa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Jaa avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Jaa swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Jaa tries to clinch but Vasquez moves out of range.
A quick step to the side and Vasquez tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Vasquez on the wrong end of a nice jab.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Jaa fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Vasquez tries a body shot but Jaa blocks it.
Jaa presses Vasquez against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
A right hook to the body lands for Jaa.
Jaa throws a head punch that misses.

A quick uppercut on the inside from Jaa.
Vasquez wants to break the clinch but can't.
Jaa has Vasquez pressed against the cage, preventing Vasquez from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Jaa lands a right hand.
Vasquez has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Jaa makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Vasquez wants to get back to striking at distance but Jaa won't allow it.

Vasquez blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Jaa lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Jaa lands with a short punch from the clinch.

Vasquez is rocked!
Jaa lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Vasquez or not.

Oh Vasquez is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Jaa throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Vasquezs head.
Jaa swings wildly with an uppercut but Vasquez uses good head movement to avoid it.
Jaa lands with a left to the head.
Vasquez wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Jaa creates a bit of space for himself and rocks Vasquez with a big uppercut! Vasquez tries to clinch up but Jaa pushes him back against the cage and lands another monster strike that crumples Vasquez to the mat! Vasquez covers up and Jaa unloads with more strikes until the referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Tony Jaa!
Tony Jaa seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
