PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between New Jack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Beecher (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jack has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, New Jack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Paul Beecher!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Dean Styles and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beecher stalks Jack and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Jack's face. Jack staggers backwards, shaken.
Jack lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Beecher backs up against the cage.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jack is defended easily by Beecher.
Beecher appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Jack has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Jack fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Beecher, pushing him back against the cage.
Beecher tries to stall but Jack uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Jack goes for a takedown attempt but Beecher pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Beecher slaps away a takedown attempt from Jack, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for New Jack. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jack is breathing heavily.
Nice jab there from Beecher.

Beecher throws a right and a left that Jack avoids nicely.

Beecher tests Jack's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Beecher ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Beecher swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
A quick step to the side and Jack tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

Jack closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jack seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Beecher has recovered full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Beecher is trying to control the position but Jack postures up.
Beecher is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Beecher looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Jack puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Jack is pressing down on Beecher's thigh, looking to free his foot. Beecher is holding on for now.

Jack is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Beecher doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jack.

The fighters are battling for position here. Beecher manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Jack slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Beecher is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Beecher throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Beecher is trying to keep Jack in close.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Jack drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Beecher dives on top into guard.

Beecher throws a series of punches but Jack moves out of range.

Jack closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Beecher did well to prevent Jack getting side control.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Beecher has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Jack is working away from the top position though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beecher wants to get back to his feet.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jack connects with a nice short shot to Beecher's temple.

Jack is working for a submission of some sort.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jack decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Beecher scores with a jab. Jack acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Jack clinches up against the cage.
Beecher is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Beecher is trying to stall.

Jack gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Beecher regains guard.
Jack engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Jack postures up.
Beecher might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jack haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Jack seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Beecher for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Jack with a flurry of punches that miss.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Jack is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Beecher's half guard.

Beecher has one foot on Jack's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Beecher feints a jab promting Jack to slip. Beecher then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Jack slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Beecher lands a right hook to the body.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Beecher throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Jack gets in close and instigates a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Paul Beecher will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Jack pivots, looking for a leg kick but Beecher is out of range and Jack settles back down.

Jack shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Beecher's guard.
Jack postures up.
Jack seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Beecher wants to sweep here but Jack controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jack stands up and waves to Beecher to follow him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Beecher dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Jack darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Jack is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Beecher sees it coming and defends easily.

Beecher pushes Jack off looking to stand but Jack dives back in and keeps control.

Beecher regains full guard. Nicely done.
Jack slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Beecher doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Beecher fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Beecher misses with the combination.
Jack tries to clinch up but Beecher circles away and keeps his distance.
Beecher throws a shot to the body.
Paul Beecher is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The fighters circle momentarily. Beecher darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

and Jack counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Jack.
Beecher is trying to control the position but Jack postures up.
Jack trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Paul Beecher is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Beecher is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jack decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Beecher, up you get!
Beecher lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Jack circles away quickly and effectively.

Beecher gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Beecher wants to get back to his feet but Jack passes into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jack perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to New Jack.
I think Beecher has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
