PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between JJ McNee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rhys Edwards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, JJ McNee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rhys Edwards!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McNee misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Edwards has his takedown stuffed
and McNee counters with a lovely straight right hand!
McNee defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Edwards.
Edwards shoots in but McNee avoids the takedown attempt easily.
JJ McNee has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rhys Edwards.
McNee listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Edwards shoots for a double leg takedown but McNee sprawls well. He's pushed Edwards's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Edwards takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Edwards takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Edwards moves out of range of the strikes.

McNee scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Edwards shoots in for a double leg but McNee sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
McNee connects with a body shot that sends Edwards's belly button to the back.

McNee ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Edwards moves away.
McNee shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Edwards feints the counter takedown.

and Edwards counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
McNee keeping control of the position.

Edwards is looking for a kimura but McNee is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Edwards to get the leverage.
McNee is trying to get back to full guard.

McNee is working hard here to advance position.

Edwards is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so McNee is just riding it out for now. Edwards eventually gives up the hold.
McNee wants to get back to full guard.
McNee knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Edwards on the ground.
Edwards keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

McNee kicks off Edwards and gets to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McNee throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Edwards.
And Edwards tries to counter it with a takedown but McNee pushes his down on his head and steps out.

McNee throws a body kick that misses

and Edwards counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
McNee keeping moving, preventing Edwards from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McNee is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Edwards trying to control the position from guard on top but McNee is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Edwards drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but McNee manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Edwards has McNee in his guard.

McNee throws a strike but Edwards rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Edwards working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
McNee wants to stand and escape but Edwards is having none of it.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JJ McNee dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Edwards gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and McNee counters with a straight right hand.
Edwards with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling McNee to score with a decent uppercut.
McNee scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
McNee tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Edwards was well out of range. Poor timing from McNee.
Nice defenses there by Edwards.
And Edwards tries to counter it with a takedown but McNee pushes his down on his head and steps out.
McNee feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Edwardss jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

A bone on bone clash there as Edwards blocks the leg kick.

Rhys Edwards has got the better of the ground game so far.

Edwards wants to work for an arm triangle but McNee is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Edwards looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Edwards is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, McNee has managed to free his arm - good work.
Edwards wants to lay and pray for a moment but McNee keeps working.
McNee works his way to full guard. Good work.
McNee is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Edwards can do to turn this around?
Edwards stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McNee swivels though and keeps the full guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
McNee can't keep his opponent in guard - Edwards advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Edwards is sneakily working for an arm triangle but McNee sees it coming and defends easily.
McNee is looking to improve his position.
McNee wants to control but Edwards is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Edwards is working for a submission of some sort.
McNee makes his way to full guard. A much better position for McNee.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Edwards trying to control but McNee is working from the bottom.
McNee controls Edwards momentarily but Edwards frees himself.
McNee looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Edwards drops back looking for a leg! McNee is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and McNee manages to kick Edwards off! Edwards jumps back into McNee's guard.
Edwards stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McNee swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
JJ McNee is winning the standup battle so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Edwards shoots in and drives through. McNee sprawls well.
Edwards takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
JJ McNee is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Edwards fails with the takedown
letting McNee counter with a right hand.
JJ McNee has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rhys Edwards.
McNee throws a series of punches but Edwards avoids them all with ease.
Edwards feints the counter takedown.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Edwards takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Edwards on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JJ McNee dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


McNee throws a left jab followed by a right to the body, Oh Edwards colapses and takes a barrage of punches from McNee as he moves to mount! the ref stops the fight and Edwards is left battered and dazed whilst McNee and his camp cheer!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). JJ McNee!
The defeated Rhys Edwards had this to say: 'i would have to work harder than this. i truely deserved to lose today my opponent was juse too good'.
