PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ron Bob (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gus McKenna (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ron Bob!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Gus McKenna!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKenna thuds a left hand into Bob's body.
McKenna slips under a jab from Bob.
Bob tries to clinch there but McKenna circles away.
Bob takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Ron Bob seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bob misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from McKenna.
McKenna looks to land a left hand but Bob moved out of range nicely.
Bob takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
McKenna avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Bob rushes McKenna and presses him up against the cage.
McKenna's coach down at Canadian Top Team was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on McKenna's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Bob jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as McKenna walks away with a smile on his face. Bob gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
McKenna jabs at Bob's body.
A punch lands to the side of Bob 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Bob has been working on his balance at Crucible, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by McKenna.
McKenna throws a wild body kick that Bob sees coming a mile off.
McKenna paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Bob moves to clinch but McKenna breaks away
enabling McKenna to counter with a crisp jab.
Nice shot by McKenna.
Bob misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Bob moves into the clinch successfully.
McKenna is trying to maintain a safe position but Bob gets an underhook and turns McKenna into the cage.
Bob throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Bob tries to score a body lock takedown but McKenna shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ron Bob. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McKenna lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
McKenna wants to get back to striking at distance but Bob won't allow it.
McKenna scores with a shoulder strike.

McKenna breaks from the clinch.
McKenna jabs Bob right on the nose. Bob blinks but takes it well.
Bob looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Good leg kick by McKenna there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Bob pushes McKenna up against the cage in a clinch.
Bob tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. McKenna smiles and moves away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bob fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Bob closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Bob lands in his opponent's guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McKenna can do anything to dispel that myth.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Bob loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
McKenna controlling Bob's posture.

Bob is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Bob has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Bob tries to stand but McKenna is controlling from the bottom.

Bob thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bob is fighting to break McKenna's control of his arms but McKenna is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Bob pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McKenna is keeping the position for now.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Bob thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Bob scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Bob postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Bob pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McKenna is keeping the position for now.
McKenna seems keen to control Bob's posture.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Bob wants to control from the top but McKenna keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

It looks like Gus McKenna has been cut.
Bob fails with a takedown attempt.
Bob takes one on the chin but seems OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gus McKenna dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Gus McKenna's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Bob moves into the clinch.


It looks like Ron Bob has been cut.
McKenna tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
McKenna has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Bob is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables McKenna to keep the fight standing.

Bob wants the takedown. McKenna is fighting it off but Bob persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in McKenna's guard against the cage.

McKenna uses the cage to get back to his feet.
McKenna's corner calls for a 1-2. McKenna obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
McKenna's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Bob connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! McKenna scrambles back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McKenna fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Bob dives in and grabs McKenna's left leg, looking for a takedown. McKenna pushes down on Bob's head and hops out.
Bob throws a right hand that misses
and McKenna connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Good standup being displayed there by McKenna as he connects with a hook.
Nice takedown defense from McKenna. No joy for Bob on that attempt.
McKenna looks like he wants to counter punch here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ron Bob. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bob shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and McKenna counters with a straight right hand.
McKenna throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McKenna lands with a thumping leg kick.
McKenna connects with a single shot there.
Bob fails with the takedown
and McKenna counters with a lovely shot to the body.
McKenna bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
McKenna leaves Bob with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Bob gets caught by a big overhand right and goes down! McKenna gets on top of him and starts throwing some serious punches until the ref intervenes and stops the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gus McKenna!
Gus McKenna took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
