PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Piet Kriel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Shawn Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Piet Kriel!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Dmitry Maklakov and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones closes the distance and pushes Kriel back into the cage.
Jones blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Kriel can't get the takedown.
Jones gets underhooks to prevent Kriel's takedown attempt.

Jones jumps into guard, dragging Kriel to the mat.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Kriel from controlling successfully.
Kriel controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Kriel trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kriel wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jones shoots in for a double leg but Kriel sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Kriel steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Jones.

Kriel gets caught flat footed, as Jones shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Kriel has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Jones can't keep his opponent in guard - Kriel advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Kriel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jones is just riding it out for now. Kriel eventually gives up the hold.
Kriel is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones is looking to control Kriel's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Jones avoid being mounted?
Kriel is trying to control the action in half guard but Jones is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Jones wants to control but Kriel is keeping busy.

Kriel is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Kriel shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jones sprawls well. Jones wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kriel gets slowly back to his feet.
Jones went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Jones shoots in and drives through. Kriel sprawls well.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown but Kriel manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Jones's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Kriel goes for a double leg but Jones avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Jones continues to drive forward.
Shawn Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Piet Kriel.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kriel takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Kriel has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Jones's face.

Piet Kriel showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Kriel is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Jones can't fight it off and eventually Kriel manages to take the fight to the floor. Jones looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Well Kriel has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
