PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dieter Schmidt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Winnie Pooh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Winnie Pooh told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dieter Schmidt!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Winnie Pooh!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Paulo Santos and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidt bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Pooh's head.
Schmidt throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Pooh changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Nice body kick there by Schmidt.
Pooh takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Pooh shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
We've been told by Schmidt's head coaches at Soul Supremacy Rio that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Pooh shoots in looking for a takedown. Schmidt tries to sprawl out of it but Pooh keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Schmidt manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Pooh ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Schmidt moves away.
Pooh's coach down at Soul Supremacy Rio was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Pooh's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Schmidt throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Schmidt lands a front kick.
Pooh shoots for a double leg takedown but Schmidt sprawls well. He's pushed Pooh's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Dieter Schmidt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Winnie Pooh.
Pooh takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Schmidt throws a leg kick which misses Pooh's front leg but catches the back leg as Pooh tries to avoid it.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Schmidt buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Pooh shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Schmidt defends it nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Schmidt lands a nice leg kick that just misses Pooh's sensitive parts.
Schmidt turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Pooh takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Pooh fails with a takedown attempt.
Pooh has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Schmidt finds it's way round the side to connect with Pooh's head.
Schmidt slips under a jab.
Schmidt thuds his right hand into Pooh's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Schmidt with a nice cross.
Pooh closes this distance looking for a takedown but Schmidt circles away.
Schmidt is looking to counter punch.
Pooh shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Winnie Pooh seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Schmidt scores with a spinning back kick!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Pooh rushes Schmidt and presses him up against the cage.

Schmidt breaks the clinch.
Schmidt lands a slapping body shot.
Pooh tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Schmidt makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Pooh really felt that one!
Pooh looks winded!

Schmidt catches Pooh napping and connects with a big right hand that sends Pooh to the canvas!


Pooh is rocked!
Schmidt slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Pooh is still in real trouble! Can Schmidt finish him?
Schmidt wants to get up but he can't break Pooh's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Schmidt tries to free his leg and advance position but Pooh is retaining full guard.
Pooh seems to have recovered his senses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt is working hard here to advance position.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Schmidt trying to stand up but can't free himself from Pooh's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pooh is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Schmidt is aware though and is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Schmidt won't allow Pooh to sweep him here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Nice sprawl there from Schmidt as Pooh shoots in.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Schmidt throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Schmidt scoring well with a low kick there.
Schmidt connects with an inside leg kick.
Pooh is looking to clinch.
Schmidt stuns Pooh with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Pooh throws a lazy uppercut
and Schmidt counters with a nice low kick that buckles Pooh's knee momentarily.
Schmidt keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Schmidt fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Pooh.
Pooh jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Schmidt throws a quick inside leg kick.

Pooh rushes Schmidt and presses him up against the cage.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
A short body shot lands from Schmidt as the two fighters clinch.

Schmidt breaks from the clinch.
Pooh shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Schmidt as he avoids it easily.
Schmidt lands with a kick to the ribs.
Pooh gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Schmidt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dieter Schmidt dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Good leg kick by Schmidt there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Schmidt scores with the left hand. Pooh knows he should have avoided that one.
Pooh pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Pooh changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Schmidt tries to avoid it but Pooh manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Schmidt to the ground. Schmidt escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Pooh fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Pooh sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
That kick from Schmidt tenderised Pooh's leg. Pooh is trying to keep his angry face on.
Pooh tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Schmidt was well out of range. Poor timing from Pooh.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Schmidt, right into the meat.
Schmidt lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Oooh a lovely combination from Schmidt sends Pooh down but not out. Schmidt dives into side control looking to finish.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Schmidt decides to stand up, so the ref orders Pooh to his feet.
Schmidt pounces like a tiger and cracks Pooh with a vicious hook! Pooh is down but not out! Schmidt follows up with more strikes forcing the ref to jump in and stop it!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Dieter Schmidt!
Dieter Schmidt retains his lightweight title!
