The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruiz shoots in looking for a takedown. Birmbaum tries to sprawl out of it but Ruiz keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Birmbaum manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Birmbaum half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Ruiz moves into the clinch.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Birmbaum creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
