PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Charles Kota (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vesa Asikainen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kota comes into the arena with Airplanes - B.o.B ft Hayley Williams blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Charles Kota!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 17 - 0, fighting out of London, Vesa Asikainen!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Arvi Lind and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kota shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Asikainen napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Asikainen struggling a bit here.
Asikainen wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
You can see the frustration on Asikainen's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Asikainen can do anything to dispel that myth.
Asikainen takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Kota tries to score with some ground and pound. Asikainen controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Kota swings around for an armbar but Asikainen sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Kota's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kota working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Asikainen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Asikainen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kota has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Asikainen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Asikainen is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Kota reverses the position - he's now on top in Asikainen's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kota loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Kota throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Asikainen works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Kota lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Asikainen wants to stand up but Kota is controlling him.

That's time! Kota's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Kota rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Asikainen connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Asikainen bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

Charles Kota has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Vesa Asikainen.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Kota is standing up over Asikainen. Asikainen looks to escape but Kota dives into side control.

Kota is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Asikainen is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Kota throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Asikainen works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Asikainen has one foot on Kota's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Kota leaves Asikainen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Kota swats away the attempt to clinch by Asikainen.
No luck for Asikainen with that takedown attempt.
Asikainen misses with a looping left.
Asikainen has his takedown stuffed
and Kota counters with a nice uppercut.
Kota looks for a takedown but Asikainen sprawls well.
Asikainen shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kota as he avoids it easily.
Asikainen shoots in but Kota avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Asikainen is breathing heavily.

Asikainen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kota as he jumps to the side.

Kota closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kota lands in his opponent's guard.

Kota postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Asikainen is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kota, into his guard.

Kota will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Asikainen slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Asikainen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That was a close second round but I would say that Charles Kota will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Kota drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Asikainen gets the underhooks and prevents it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Asikainen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kota has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Asikainen has managed to get both his arms back between Kota's legs - danger averted.
Asikainen sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kota's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Asikainen is trying to work for a kimura but Kota is defending well.

Kota is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Asikainen pulls his head out easily.
Asikainen is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Kota!

Kota looks very frustrated and is flailing away with strikes from the bottom. His corner are telling him to stay calm.
Kota wants to control but Asikainen is having none of it.

Kota sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Asikainen lands a nice short elbow.

Asikainen misses with a takedown

and Kota counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Asikainen!

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Asikainen is defended easily by Kota.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kota gets the takedown into side control.

Asikainen sneaks out the side door and pushes Kota away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Asikainen dives in and grabs Kota's left leg, looking for a takedown. Kota pushes down on Asikainen's head and hops out.
Vesa Asikainen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Asikainen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kota sprawls well. Kota wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Asikainen gets slowly back to his feet.

Kota shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Asikainen manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Vesa Asikainen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kota has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
