PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jade Mclaughlin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Shawn Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jade Mclaughlin!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Bruno Hogan and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mclaughlin slaps away a takedown attempt from Jones, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Shawn Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mclaughlin thuds his shin into the meat of Jones's side.
Mclaughlin is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Jones shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mclaughlin defends it nicely.
Jones has his takedown stuffed

and Mclaughlin counters with a nice double leg into side control. Jones won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shawn Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mclaughlin throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Mclaughlin is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jones knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mclaughlin creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Jones sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Mclaughlin is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Jones's shoulder. That is not cool.
Jones is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Mclaughlin has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Mclaughlin rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mclaughlin tries to pull guard but Jones holds him up against the cage and eventually Mclaughlin drops back down to his feet.

Jones jumps guard but Mclaughlin turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Mclaughlin is trying to trip Jones. He has hold of a leg but Jones is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mclaughlin persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Mclaughlin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mclaughlin wanted to stand there but Jones had control of the position.

Mclaughlin wants to stand but Jones is controlling his posture from full guard.
Mclaughlin is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Jones fails with a takedown attempt.
Jones defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mclaughlin.

Mclaughlin displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
Jones gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Mclaughlin counters with a head kick. That will keep Jones thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Mclaughlin throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Jones looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Mclaughlin jumps into guard, dragging Jones to the mat.
Mclaughlin controls Jones momentarily but Jones frees himself.

Jones is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones trying to control but Mclaughlin is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jade Mclaughlin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Mclaughlin throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jones closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mclaughlin circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Mclaughlin.
Mclaughlin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Nice takedown defense from Mclaughlin. No joy for Jones on that attempt.
Mclaughlin dives in for a single leg takedown but Jones sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Mclaughlin looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Jones will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Mclaughlin clinches up with Jones and pushes him back against the cage.

Jones tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Mclaughlin defends well and Jones ends up having to push Mclaughlin into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Mclaughlin closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jones's guard.
Mclaughlin looking to sit in guard and control but Jones gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Jones wants to control from the top but Mclaughlin keeps moving.
Jones wants to stand but Mclaughlin has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Jones trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Jones trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mclaughlin has momentary wrist control but Jones slips an elbow through the middle.
Mclaughlin wants to stand up but Jones is controlling him.
Mclaughlin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mclaughlin holds on and takes a little breather.

Jones drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Jones jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Jones thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mclaughlin has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Jones has passed into side control.
Jade Mclaughlin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Jones tries to move to mount but Mclaughlin blocks the move with his legs.
Jones trying to control the action but Mclaughlin is working from the bottom.

Jones is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mclaughlin has escaped the position, nice work there.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mclaughlin tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Jones wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jade Mclaughlin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Mclaughlin drives through and clinches with Jones against the cage.

Mclaughlin is trying to control the position but Jones postures up.

Mclaughlin has his foot on Jones's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jones works his way back into a safe position though.

Mclaughlin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Jones is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Mclaughlin wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Jones showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Mclaughlin.
Mclaughlin tries to clinch but Jones moves away

and Jones counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mclaughlin can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jones controls the pace.
Jones tries to free his leg and advance position but Mclaughlin is retaining full guard.

Jones thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mclaughlin keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Mclaughlin wants to stand up but Jones is controlling him.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Jones has gone for a leg lock! Mclaughlin slips out almost immediately though and dives into Jones's guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Shawn Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Jones is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Mclaughlin slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Jade Mclaughlin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mclaughlin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
