PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Glen Starner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mr Charcoal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mr Charcoal told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 29 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Glen Starner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mr Charcoal!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, James Atkins and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Starner blocks the body kick.
A swing and a miss from Charcoal.
Starner attempts a counter takedown but Charcoal avoids it well and moves away.
Charcoal scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Starner closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Charcoal quickly recovers to half guard.
Starner prevents Charcoal from improving his position.

Starner is trying to work for a kimura but Charcoal is defending well.
Charcoal regains full guard. Nicely done.

Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!

Charcoal is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Starner wants to control from the top but Charcoal keeps moving.

Charcoal has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Starner can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Charcoal is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Starner content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Charcoal looking to hit a scissor sweep but Starner is one step ahead there.
Starner throws a big elbow that misses.
We've been hearing that Starner has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Starner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Charcoal is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Starner is aware though and is defending well.

Charcoal pulls Starner in close to his closed guard and prevents Starner from doing any damage or advancing position.
Charcoal manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Starner manages to get himself to full guard.

Starner throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Charcoal stays in close to Starner's body and controls the position.
Charcoal wants to control from the top but Starner keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Starner will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Charcoal slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Starner is staying active underneath Charcoal, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Starner tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Glen Starner will probably get the nod.

Charcoal lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Oh Starner is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Charcoal is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Starner.
Charcoal lands a nice looking body shot.
Starner seems to have got his legs back now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Charcoal tries to move into range but Starner moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Starner looks to land a right hand but Charcoal moved out of range.
Charcoal scores with a head kick.
Charcoal throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Charcoal throws a right hand that Starner ducks under and follows up with a left that Starner also avoids with ease.

Charcoal throws a low kick but Starner avoids it.
Starner appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Charcoal uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Starner.
Charcoal digs a good body shot into Starner's ribs.
Charcoal misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Charcoal throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Starner stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Starner moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Starner looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Starner throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Charcoal throws a counter combo.
Mr Charcoal seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Starner takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Charcoal lands a head shot.
Charcoal throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Starner's head.
A looping hook to the body misses from Starner. Charcoal does a little dance to reset his feet.
Starner throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Charcoal.
Starner looks to score with a jab to the body but Charcoal is just out of range.
Starner connects with a looping right hand.

Charcoal drops Starner with a beautiful combination! Starner stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Charcoal is looking for the KO!

Charcoal displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Starner throws out the jab.

Charcoal ducks under a wild hook from Starner.
Charcoal throws a fast counter high kick but Starner manages to duck under it in time.

Charcoal lands a big head kick that sends Starner tumbling to the mat! Charcoal takes a step backwards and waves Starner back to his feet - he wants the finish!

Starner looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Starner closes the distance and clinches up with Charcoal, looking for a takedown. Starner pushes Charcoal against the cage but Charcoal circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Charcoal throws out a counter right but Starner avoids it with no problem.
Starner takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Starner takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Charcoal's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Charcoal duly obliges.
Starner swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Charcoal lands with a thumping leg kick.
Charcoal has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Mr Charcoal is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Starner takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Charcoal jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Charcoal rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Starner moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mr Charcoal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Charcoal shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Starner napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Charcoal's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Starner is trying to maintain the position but Charcoal is very close to passing his half guard.

Starner is trying to get back to full guard.
Charcoal wants to get back to his feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

A jab from Starner misses.
Starner shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Charcoal sprawls well. Charcoal wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Starner gets slowly back to his feet.
Starner fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Charcoal avoids it really well and circles away.
Starner misses with a right hand
and Charcoal counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Charcoal moves into the clinch successfully.
Charcoal fails to pull guard.
Charcoal misses with a hook to the ribs.
Starner pushes Charcoal back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mr Charcoal comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Charcoal has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
