PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Yuri Boshtok (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Carlyle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Boshtok comes into the arena with Jump Around M*thaf*cka blaring out of the sound system. Charles Carlyle acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yuri Boshtok!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Charles Carlyle!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Paul Tew and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carlyle slips a jab from Boshtok.
Boshtok misses with a right hand

and Carlyle counters with a single leg into guard. Boshtok didn't expect that.
Boshtok keeping moving, preventing Carlyle from controlling successfully.

Carlyle is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Boshtok has Carlyle pulled in close to control his posture.
Boshtok tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carlyle missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Carlyle is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Carlyle working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Boshtok avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Carlyle thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

A nice inside leg kick there by Boshtok. That's going to slow Carlyle down.
A head kick misses from Carlyle.
Boshtok ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Carlyle moves away.
Carlyle throws a front kick that sends Boshtok stumbling back into the cage.
Carlyle on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
A slapping body kick lands there for Carlyle.
Boshtok tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Carlyle defends well and Boshtok ends up having to push Carlyle into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Boshtok misses with an uppercut. Carlyle saw that one coming.
Carlyle is looking for the big counter here.
Boshtok throws a hook to the side of Carlyle's head but Carlyle sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Boshtok throws a jab but it's blocked by Carlyle.
Yuri Boshtok seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Boshtok ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Carlyle moves away.
Carlyle checks the leg kick nicely there.

Boshtok misses with a looping right.
Carlyle lands a head kick. Boshtok smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Carlyle is looking to chop away at Boshtok's legs.
Carlyle avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Despite the aggression on Carlyle's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Carlyle keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Carlyle displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Boshtok throws out the jab.
Carlyle misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Carlyle throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Carlyle bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Carlyle wants to counter the offense by Boshtok and move into the clinch position.

Boshtok lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Carlyle fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Boshtok avoids it really well and circles away.

Boshtok decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Carlyle manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Boshtok manages to get himself to full guard.

A close round but Charles Carlyle will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Carlyle rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Boshtok moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

A looping hook to the body misses from Boshtok. Carlyle does a little dance to reset his feet.

Carlyle ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Charles Carlyle seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Carlyle closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Boshtok did well to prevent Carlyle getting side control.
Carlyle is looking to take a break and control but Boshtok is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Boshtok on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Boshtok is looking for a sweep. Carlyle is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Boshtok is looking to control Carlyle's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Boshtok avoid being mounted?

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Boshtok is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Boshtok feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carlyle wants to hit a switch here but Boshtok passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Carlyle there!

That was a close second round but I would say that Yuri Boshtok will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Boshtok seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Carlyle postures up and lands a big shot to Boshtok's brow.

Carlyle drops back, looking for a kneebar! Boshtok looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Boshtok looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Boshtok!

Carlyle tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Carlyle has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Carlyle is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Boshtok defends it well.
Carlyle seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Boshtok does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Carlyle thows a huge punch but Boshtok dodges it nicely.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Boshtok is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Carlyle is trying to control but can't.

Well Boshtok has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
