PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dallas Rainwater (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ronnie McDonald (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McDonald is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Get Busy Living. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Ronnie McDonald was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dallas Rainwater!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ronnie McDonald!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McDonald fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.

McDonald closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - McDonald lands in his opponent's guard.
Rainwater seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

McDonald avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
McDonald looking to pass the guard.
McDonald is in close to Rainwater's body, working some short punches and elbows.
McDonald looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
McDonald has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rainwater is proving hard to escape from.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rainwater keeping moving, preventing McDonald from controlling successfully.
McDonald is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Ronnie McDonald wasn't active enough on the ground.
Rainwater has a takedown stuffed.

McDonald changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rainwater looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

McDonald is trying to get an arm triangle but Rainwater is defending well.
McDonald controls the position.
Rainwater is looking for a sweep.
McDonald cracks Rainwater with an elbow. That is naaassty.

McDonald looks up at the clock and then as Rainwater takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, McDonald smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Rainwater is trying to get back to half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Rainwater controls the position for a moment.

McDonald stands up and we're back to a striking position.
McDonald misses with a takedown attempt - Rainwater sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Rainwater circles away from the clinch attempt
and Rainwater connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

McDonald slips under a jab.
McDonald tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Rainwater manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Nice cross by Rainwater.

McDonald closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Rainwater is looking for a sweep.
You can see the frustration on Rainwater's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

McDonald working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Rainwater is not content to let McDonald control the position.
McDonald remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Rainwater takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rainwater is looking to regain half guard here but McDonald keeps moving and retains side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A lull in the action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rainwater is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ronnie McDonald dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


McDonald's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Rainwater connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! McDonald scrambles back to his feet.

McDonald shoots in and bounces Rainwater off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

McDonald wanted to stand there but Rainwater had control of the position.

Rainwater is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
McDonald cracks Rainwater with a solid left hand.

McDonald has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

McDonald got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rainwater has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McDonald has managed to get both his arms back between Rainwater's legs - danger averted.

McDonald closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rainwater did well to prevent McDonald getting side control.
McDonald not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rainwater holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Rainwater is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McDonald's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McDonald's back!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McDonald gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
McDonald shoots for a double leg takedown but Rainwater sprawls well. He's pushed McDonald's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Rainwater avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
McDonald closes the distance and clinches up with Rainwater, looking for a takedown. McDonald pushes Rainwater against the cage but Rainwater circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Dallas Rainwater has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ronnie McDonald.

McDonald closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rainwater's guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ronnie McDonald hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
A combination from McDonald does no damage.
McDonald moves in looking to clinch but Rainwater pushes him off.
McDonald shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Rainwater sprawls well. Rainwater wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McDonald gets slowly back to his feet.

McDonald seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Rainwater not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Rainwater throws his legs up looking for a submission but McDonald uses it to pass to side control.

McDonald decides to stand back up. McDonald steps back and let's Rainwater get back to his feet.

McDonald tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Rainwater manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Rainwater shoots in looking for a takedown but McDonald manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rainwater's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

McDonald rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rainwater moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Rainwater is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

McDonald has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Rainwater is working for a kimura but McDonald is defending it quite comfortably.

Rainwater is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rainwater shoots for a takedown but McDonald saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Dallas Rainwater has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dallas Rainwater.
Well McDonald has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
