PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steven Zisteau (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Steven Zisteau!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Frank Sonnen!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Marco Blurström and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zisteau throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sonnen's waist but Sonnen gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Zisteau off to one side.

Sonnen closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Sonnen shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Zisteau eats them both and turns towards Sonnen to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Sonnen is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Zisteau shoots in looking for a takedown. Sonnen tries to sprawl out of it but Zisteau keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sonnen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Zisteau shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Zisteau was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Zisteau goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Sonnen rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Zisteau's guard! Nice work there by Sonnen!
Zisteau might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Sonnen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Zisteau has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sonnen has managed to get both his arms back between Zisteau's legs - danger averted.

Zisteau is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Sonnen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Frank Sonnen wasn't active enough on the ground.
Sonnen slaps away a takedown attempt from Zisteau, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Sonnen is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Frank Sonnen hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Horrible takedown by Zisteau or perhaps it was just good defense by Sonnen which made him look bad.
Sonnen will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Sonnen leaves Zisteau with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Sonnen slaps away a takedown attempt from Zisteau, before circling back to the center of the mat.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Sonnen. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Sonnen stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sonnen wants it to stay on the feet.

Sonnen fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Zisteau to the ground. Sonnen is now in Zisteau's guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Sonnen throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Zisteau was covering up waiting for the punch and Sonnen finishes the takedown easily into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Sonnen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Zisteau closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Sonnen to the mat! Sonnen manages to get full guard.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Zisteau drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Zisteau jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Sonnen is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Zisteau presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
A frustrated look appears on Sonnen's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Zisteau has Sonnen pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Sonnen manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zisteau tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sonnen swivels and escapes.
Zisteau takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Sonnen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Well Sonnen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
