The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nijhoff shoots and misses
and Whitaker Jr counters with a good low kick that Nijhoff was not able to check.
Nijhoff is trying hard to land a takedown here. Whitaker Jr sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Nijhoff closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Whitaker Jr has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Nijhoff is landing a low percentage of strikes.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Nijhoff accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Nijhoff postures up in Whitaker Jr's guard and throws a big left but Whitaker Jr blocks it.
Whitaker Jr controls Nijhoff momentarily but Nijhoff frees himself.
Whitaker Jr pulls Nijhoff in close to prevent any damage.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Pernell Whitaker Jr wasn't active enough on the ground.
Nijhoff shoots in looking for a takedown but Whitaker Jr manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Nijhoff's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bram Nijhoff. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nijhoff tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Whitaker Jr enables Nijhoff to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Whitaker Jr manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Oh Nijhoff is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Whitaker Jr lands a monster head kick that reverborates around the arena! The crowd goes wild as Nijhoff crumples to the floor! Whitaker Jr milks the crowd's applause and if that isn't knockout of the night, I will be very surprised!
