PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Ray Miranda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Micky Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Miranda comes to the cage accompanied by I'm Not Alright from Shinedown. Micky Ward struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 136.1lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Micky Ward told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johnny Ray Miranda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Micky Ward!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Steve Smith and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward throws a one two combo.

Miranda drives through and clinches with Ward against the cage.

Miranda jumps into guard, dragging Ward to the mat.
Ward trying to control the position from guard on top but Miranda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ward engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Ward tries to free his leg and advance position but Miranda is retaining full guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Micky Ward hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Ward clinches with his opponent.

Miranda gets control of Ward's arms and successfully pulls guard. Miranda will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Ward throwing strikes but missing.

Ward wants to get up but he can't break Miranda's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Ward is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Johnny Ray Miranda.

Ward shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Miranda manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Miranda manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ward manages to get himself to full guard.

Miranda pushes down on Ward's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Ward is defending against the submission attempts here by Miranda.

Miranda looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Ward tries to roll over but Miranda keeps him under control.

Miranda is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Ward doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Miranda.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Micky Ward will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Miranda.

Miranda darts in and clinches Ward up against the cage.
Ward tries for a takedown but Miranda manages to get underhooks.
Ward drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ward wants to break free but Miranda has control.
Miranda drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ward pulls his leg out and moves away.

Miranda closes the distance and clinches.
Ward avoiding damage as Miranda throws knees to the body.
Ward tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Miranda smiles and moves away.
Johnny Ray Miranda has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Micky Ward.

Miranda shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ward defends it nicely.

Ward clinches up with Miranda and pushes him back against the cage.
Miranda tries for a takedown but Ward manages to get underhooks.

Ward has clasped his hands together around Miranda's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Miranda bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Ward displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Miranda.

Miranda jumps guard but Ward stands there with Miranda around his waist. Miranda gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Ward has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Miranda regains guard immediately.
Miranda really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Miranda pushes Ward off and scrambles back to his feet.

Ward gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Miranda tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Ward turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Ward manages to end up in side control.
Ward is looking to take a break and control but Miranda is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Ward prevents Miranda from escaping the position.

Miranda manages to work his way to half guard, despite Ward's best efforts.
Miranda is looking for a sweep. Ward is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Ward not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Miranda tries to kick Ward off but Ward keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Miranda gets back to full guard.
Miranda is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Miranda wants to stand but Ward is controlling the position.

Miranda has a closed guard, preventing Ward from standing up.
Miranda avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Ward looking to sit in guard and control but Miranda gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Miranda closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Ward quickly recovers to half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ward can do anything to dispel that myth.

Miranda feints and as Ward raises his hands in defense, Miranda changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Ward really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Miranda. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Miranda postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Miranda cracks Ward with a solid left hand.
Ward keeping moving, preventing Miranda from controlling successfully.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ward wants to sweep here but Miranda controlling him for the moment.

Miranda is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Ward is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Ward with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Ward tries to pull guard but Miranda holds him up against the cage and eventually Ward drops back down to his feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Miranda content to control rather than advance.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Miranda seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Ward is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
