PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maurice Jones Drew (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carver McNulty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McNulty has chosen Still I Rise - Shadows Fall as his entrance music. Carver McNulty told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Maurice Jones Drew!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Carver McNulty!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Trevor Gratis and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones Drew lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McNulty circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones Drew scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
McNulty uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jones Drew.

Jones Drew dives in and scores a takedown into McNulty's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Jones Drew throws an elbow that misses. McNulty uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones Drew's guard. Nice move by McNulty!
Jones Drew knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for McNulty on the ground.

McNulty postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Jones Drew is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of McNulty, into his guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McNulty is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Jones Drew is controlling him.

McNulty drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and McNulty jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

McNulty has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

McNulty seems to be looking for submissions.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. McNulty lands a nice short elbow.

McNulty works his foot free and advances to mount.
McNulty throws a strike there. Jones Drew manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carver McNulty dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


McNulty has his takedown stuffed
and Jones Drew counters with a stiff right hand.
Jones Drew leaves McNulty with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
McNulty misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Maurice Jones Drew has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Carver McNulty.
McNulty shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones Drew as he jumps to the side.

and McNulty counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Jones Drew's guard now.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Carver McNulty has got the better of the ground game so far.
McNulty misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
