PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Oda Hattori (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Awesome. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn missing with a left hand there. Hattori was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Penn blocks a head kick by Hattori.
Penn tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Hattori counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Penn is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Penn throws a body punch but Hattori moves out of range.
Penn throws a shot from downtown. Hattori moves away and avoids it.
Hattori tries to score a power double leg takedown but Penn sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hattori somewhat.
Hattori lands a head kick. Penn smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Hattori shoots in and drives through. Penn sprawls well.

Penn dodges the punch combination from Hattori.

Penn moves into the clinch.
Hattori is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Hattori wants to break free but Penn has control.

Penn breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
No joy there for Penn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Hattori fails with the takedown.

Hattori's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
BJ Penn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Hattori counters with a big head kick but Penn shrugs it off.
Hattori avoids a punch combination nicely.

BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Penn has closed the distance and engaged Hattori in a clinch.

Penn keeps control of Hattori as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Penn gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Hattori wants to get back to his feet but Penn is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hattori trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

BJ Penn has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Hattori doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
A combination from Penn does no damage.
Hattori shoots for a double leg takedown but Penn sprawls well. He's pushed Hattori's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Hattori misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Penn throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Hattori has a takedown stuffed.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Hattori prevents the takedown attempt.

Penn clobbers Hattori with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Hattori shoots in and drives through. Penn sprawls well.

Penn darts in and clinches Hattori up against the cage.
Penn keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Hattori's efforts to push away.

Hattori with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Penn to score with a decent uppercut.

Penn swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Hattori shoots in looking for a takedown. Penn tries to sprawl out of it but Hattori keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Penn manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Hattori pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Penn throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hattori.
Hattori looks for a takedown but Penn sprawls well.
A left lands for Penn.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hattori throws a nice looking combination but Penn bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and Penn counters with a series of strikes. Hattori will be more careful next time no doubt.

Hattori is rocked!
Hattori gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Penn gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Hattori is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!

BJ Penn was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
