Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derick Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen I am The Law as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Frank Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Derick Smith!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Bruno Lombardi and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith has his takedown stuffed

and Rua counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Smith can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rua controls the pace.
Smith controlling the position.
Rua pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smith is keeping the position for now.

Rua slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rua's guard.

Rua is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smith defends well.
Rua keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Rua wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith seems to be working for a kimura but Rua defends the submission attempt.

Smith stalling away here and it's allowed Rua to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Frank Rua wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Smith gets caught napping as Rua dives in and scores a takedown. Smith manages to retain guard.
Rua wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Rua works a leg free and moves into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rua is pressing down on Smith's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smith is holding on for now.

Rua gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smith to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Rua looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.

Smith drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rua manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Smith has Rua in his guard.

Rua wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smith keeps working.
Rua is really struggling to control Smith but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Smith is trying to get back to half guard.

You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Smith with a poor takedown
and Rua counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Rua has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Smith throws a strike but Rua rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Smith controls Rua momentarily but Rua frees himself.

Well Rua has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
