PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cottoneye Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Abe Nakamura (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe comes to the cage accompanied by Cottoneye Joe. Nakamura has chosen Enter the Ninja - Die Antwoord as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Cottoneye Joe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Abe Nakamura!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nakamura shoots for a double leg takedown but Joe sprawls well. He's pushed Nakamura's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and Joe counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Joe turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Joe manages to end up in side control.

Joe is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Nakamura knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nakamura tries to improve position but can't.
Nakamura wants to control but Joe postures up.
Nakamura tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Joe is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Nakamura has escaped the position, nice work there.

Joe is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Nakamura is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Joe lands some shots froms side control.

Nakamura is looking to reverse the position.
Joe is trying to ground and pound but Nakamura uses the momentary lack of control by Joe to regain half guard.

Joe is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Nakamura sees it coming and defends easily.

Joe is looking to take a break and control but Nakamura is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Joe is thwarting Nakamura's attempts to control the position.
Nakamura wants to get back to full guard.

Joe is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Joe seems to be looking for submissions.

Joe seems to be working for a kimura but Nakamura defends the submission attempt.

Joe is working for a kimura but Nakamura is defending it quite comfortably.
Nakamura is looking to control Joe's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Nakamura avoid being mounted?
Nakamura makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Nakamura.
Nakamura manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Joe manages to get himself to full guard.
Joe looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Nakamura puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Nakamura looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Nakamura slips a nice elbow through Joe's hands, connecting with Joe's forehead.

Joe is trying to maintain the position but Nakamura is very close to passing his half guard.
Joe makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Joe.
Nakamura controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Joe working for a triangle but Nakamura defends it easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Cottoneye Joe will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Nakamura shoots in looking for a takedown but Joe manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Nakamura's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Nakamura closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Joe avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Nakamura.
Nakamura works to advance to full mount. Joe defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Joe sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Nakamura works his foot free and advances to mount.
Nakamura can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Joe is looking to escape.

Nakamura wants to finish this one by submission but Joe is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Nakamura.

Nakamura is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Joe to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Joe shrugs it off.

Joe wants to hold on but Nakamura pushes him away.
Joe is looking to improve his position but Nakamura isn't that keen on the idea.
Nakamura looking to control and managing it successfully.
Joe is controlling an arm, preventing Nakamura from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Nakamura working for a submission but Joe is keeping him at bay.
Joe keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Nakamura can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Joe is looking to escape.

Nakamura goes for an armbar but Joe turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Joe.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Joe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Joe trying to control the position from guard on top but Nakamura is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Joe gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Joe tries to clinch there but Nakamura circles away.
No luck for Nakamura with that takedown attempt.

Nakamura shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Joe gets back to half guard.

Nakamura is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Joe defends it well.

Nakamura is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Nakamura thows a huge punch but Joe dodges it nicely.
Nakamura is looking to take a break and control but Joe is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Joe flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Joe throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Nakamura is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Joe is just riding it out for now. Nakamura eventually gives up the hold.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Abe Nakamura showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Nakamura changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Joe tries to avoid it but Nakamura manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Joe to the ground. Joe escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Cottoneye Joe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Abe Nakamura.
Joe tries to bum rush Nakamura with a series of wild strikes but Nakamura uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Nakamura enables Joe to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Nakamura manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Joe in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Nakamura has his hands on Joe's head, controlling the position.
Nakamura is trying to control the position but Joe postures up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Joe is looking to clinch but Nakamura is avoiding it.
Nakamura looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Nakamura shoots in looking for a takedown. Joe tries to sprawl out of it but Nakamura keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Joe manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Nakamura bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Nakamura takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Joe is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Nakamura has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Nakamura tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Nakamura has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Joe is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Nakamura's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Nakamura wants to control but Joe is keeping him busy.
Joe is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Nakamura is trying to control. Joe wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Joe wants to get back to full guard.
Joe is working hard here to advance position.
Joe is not content to let Nakamura control the position.
The fighters are battling for position here. Joe manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Nakamura sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Joe's guard.

Joe is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Nakamura pulls his head out easily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

I would just about give that final round to Abe Nakamura.
I think Nakamura has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
