PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Alexandre Calil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mitsuyo Maeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calil comes to the cage accompanied by One. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.

The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maeda blocks a head kick by Calil.
Maeda moves in looking to clinch but Calil pushes him off.
Maeda stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Maeda wants it to stay on the feet.
Calil tries to score a power double leg takedown but Maeda sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Calil somewhat.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maeda tries to close the distance and clinch up but Calil swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Calil shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Maeda sprawls well. Maeda wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Calil gets slowly back to his feet.

Maeda rushes Calil and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Maeda has clasped his hands together around Calil's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Maeda fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Maeda moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Calil tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Maeda wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Maeda tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Calil takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Maeda looking for a guillotine from mount but Calil is having none of it.
Maeda moves to back control.
Calil is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Calil rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Calil looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Maeda pushes past his half guard into mount!
Maeda content just to control the position here.
Calil is in all sorts of trouble here.
Calil is breathing heavily.
Calil tries to lock up and control but Maeda gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Calil really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Maeda throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Maeda scores with a crisp jab that stopped Calil in his tracks.
Calil fails with a takedown attempt.
Maeda stuffs the takedown.
Calil shoots in but Maeda avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Maeda rushes Calil and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Maeda is pressing down on Calil's thigh, looking to free his foot. Calil is holding on for now.

Maeda decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Calil shoots in for a takedown but Maeda shows good takedown defense.
Calil changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Maeda tries to avoid it but Calil manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Maeda to the ground. Maeda escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Maeda drives through and clinches with Calil against the cage.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Mitsuyo Maeda.

Maeda takes the fight into the clinch.

Maeda is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Calil has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Mitsuyo Maeda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Calil shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Maeda sprawls well. Maeda wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Calil gets slowly back to his feet.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Maeda throws a series of punches but Calil moves out of range.

Calil is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Maeda pulls his head out easily.
Maeda is looking to advance position but Calil won't allow it.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Maeda works his way into side control.
Calil is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Maeda has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Calil seems a little lost for a moment, as Maeda dominates the positioning.
Calil sneaks back into half guard.
Mitsuyo Maeda is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Maeda content to control rather than advance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Maeda seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mitsuyo Maeda was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Calil shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Maeda's guard.
Calil will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Calil is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Maeda is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Maeda has escaped and now he's on top!
Maeda is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Maeda's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mitsuyo Maeda was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Calil fails to land the takedown.
Maeda tries to clinch there but Calil circles away.
Alexandre Calil has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Calil thows a body shot but no joy.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mitsuyo Maeda comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Maeda has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
